Menya Shono is a Japanese-inspired restaurant serving traditional and obsessive-style ramen. The restaurant offers a unique dining experience with an open kitchen, vaulted ceilings, and a large stainless steel bar with beers on tap. The menu features a variety of ramen options, including the Shio deluxe ramen, known for its rich and flavorful broth, good chewy noodles, and toppings such as pork belly and duck char sui.
Chef and owner Tomaharu Shono opened Menya Shono in 2005, with the first U.S. location in San Francisco in 2016. Five years later, he opened the San Rafael location, which is larger than the original. The restaurant decor includes crates printed with Mensho and large wall-painted explanations of their farm-to-table approach.
Customers praise the thick, rich, and creamy broth, along with the thick, chewy, and freshly made noodles. The meat toppings are described as thick, juicy, tender, and smoky. Chef Shono is known for his signature Tori Paitan, a thick and creamy chicken broth, along with options like Mazesoba, Tsukemen, Miso Ramen, and a vegetarian Tantanmen. One standout dish is the Chintan Shio Ramen, praised for its chewy thin wheat noodles, roasted duck medallions, smoked chashu, and perfectly marinated ajitama.
Customers enjoy the quality ingredients and flavors, with many returning for favorites like the Shoyu Chintan Ramen and Vegan Tantanmen. The ambience is casual, making it a good spot for families, and the recent addition of printed menus has been well received.
