Menya Shono is a Japanese-inspired restaurant serving traditional and obsessive-style ramen. The restaurant offers a unique dining experience with an open kitchen, vaulted ceilings, and a large stainless steel bar with beers on tap. It has enough capacity for both small and large groups, with seating available at the bar. The menu features a variety of ramen options, including the Shio deluxe ramen, known for its rich and flavorful broth, good chewy noodles, and toppings such as pork belly and duck char sui. Customers praise the thick, rich, and creamy broth, along with the thick, chewy, and freshly made noodles. The meat toppings are also described as thick, juicy, tender, and smoky.
Chef and owner Tomaharu Shono opened Mensho in 2005, with the first U.S. location in San Francisco in 2016. Five years later, he opened the San Rafael location, which is larger than Mensho SF. The restaurant decor includes crates printed with Mensho and large wall-painted explanations of their farm-to-table approach. Appetizers include Corn Ribs, Enoki Chips, chicken karaage, Mentaiko Takoyaki, Nori Calamari, Chashu Rice, and Vegan Karaage.
Chef Shono is known for his signature Tori Paitan, a thick and creamy chicken broth, along with other options like Mazesoba, Tsukemen, Miso Ramen, and a vegetarian Tantanmen. One standout dish is the Chintan Shio Ramen, praised for its chewy thin wheat noodles, roasted duck medallions, smoked chashu, and perfectly marinated ajitama. While the food is highly recommended, especially the deluxe options like the Garlic Lover's and Blaze ramen, the service can be slow, with reported wait times to be seated and to place orders. Menya Shono is considered one of the best ramen restaurants outside of Japan, making it a gem in San Rafael.
