Companion Bakeshop | Westside Santa Cruz is the real deal, offering delicious breads and pastries that look like they were baked in Europe with a rustic authentic feel. The flavors are strong without being overwhelming, and pastries are NOT overly sweet. The sourdough is very mild with a good chew, nice aromas, and a fluffy inside. The wheat bread with seeds or without is always sugar free. Customers love the bread & butter with strawberry jam and the matcha latte with almond milk, which was brewed strong and sweetened with honey. The bakery gives a lot of bread and other baked goods to Food Banks, and people who work there are really nice and helpful. There is a relaxed family-friendly atmosphere and comfortable seating both inside and out, including a dog friendly patio. However, some visitors have noted consistently grumpy staff over five years. The service is prompt, and breads are fresh. Customers wish they had things like soup or a whole take home quiche, and some wish they sold India Joze CHAI. For a quick bite or to relax with comfort food, this spot is worth the wait.
