Lares Restaurant is a solid Mexican restaurant in Santa Monica, offering classic Mexican meals. The mole is to die for, and customers enjoy the chicken mole enchiladas, spicy shrimp, chili verde, and carnitas with tender, smoky meat. The salsa is perfect, and the margaritas are fantastic, including the famous margarita and Cadillac margaritas. The vegetarian dishes could use a little work, as they are basically potato and cheese. There are two floors with upstairs and downstairs bars, and live music nights with guitaristas singing. The service is solid with friendly waitstaff who make recommendations. The space is festive and great for birthday celebrations. Parking is very limited in the back, but street parking may be available a block away. The restaurant is authentic and thriving quietly, offering good food and a fun atmosphere.
