Incredible sushi, properly done Japanese-style nigiri, sashimi, and a great omakase. They even have a pufferfish course.

We were walking by after our meeting at the White House and decided sushi sounded good! This little place had no wait at 7 pm so we decided it was a good place to decompress. The menu was reasonably priced for the sashimi platters and well below what we pay in Hawai'i for sushi rolls. Nice and fresh and really well prepared. The staff was amazing accommodating and put up with us staying a few minutes after closing. The hot tea and miso soup was absolutely integral to defrosting after the rain and wind!

The food was good and there was a good selection of sake. The service was excellent (even though they only had two staff doing both table waiting and sushi making).I wish there was more roll selection/variety and an option for larger boats/platters - we had to order mostly piecemeal.Very expensive restaurant.

My wife and I went here while on vacation in DC and it was excellent. Great sushi, nice beer, good ambience (not deathly quite nor overwhelmingly loud i.e. able to converse and be comfortable) and the service was excellent. Highly recommend. Will return once we are back in DC. Hopefully soon. Great town, too.

We went for a Saturday date night and they required a deposit. I expected something grand due to this. I will say ...The service at the restaurant was extremely accommodating. Our server was also one of the sushi chefs. A 3 because the sushi portions were very small and the ambiance was not good for a date night. I imagine it may be very busy during the week. It looks like they have some specialty items on the menu that are off the beaten path of traditional American sushi.

I would like to start with a disclaimer that you can spend a lot of money at this restaurant, however there is still plenty to enjoy on a budget! Whether you’re coming for a party, casual lunch or a special occasion you will leave Sushi Gakyu feeling appreciative of the friendly staff and their great services to the customers. This was my experience when I went with a few friends to the closest food spot we could find that was also interesting. Their drink selection was plentiful and diverse for all of the right reasons. You want a reasonably priced cocktail or beer? No problem! You want something more fancy and/or to share with the table? No problem! The same applies with their food menu. I was able to get a miso soup and chefs choice of sushi roll for a really affordable price, but looking on their menu they offer some premium dishes. If it wasn’t for the distance I’d love to get some friends together and fully experience a majority of their menu together! Also the restaurant was very clean and had an awesome atmosphere!

Great service, excellent miso soup, delicious seaweed, and very fresh nigiri and sushi. Enjoyed spicy tuna, eel, and scallop roles. Our son enjoyed his california role. We will be back!

Hands down the best sushi I have ever had. The staff was extremely nice and made an immense effort to accommodate some dietary restrictions. I would recommend!

My friend and I went on a Thursday night and the restaurant was completely empty, so it was a quiet and more personal setting. The server was incredibly nice. We got the green tea and yuzu cocktails, which were both very light and refreshing. We ordered the Deluxe assorted sushi and the Gakyu Chirashi bowl. The sushi rolls were very typical of any other sushi restaurant, and the Chirashi bowl had some good toppings that paired with the rice. Overall, the food was decent, but the fish was not that fresh. Surprisingly, the ginger was incredibly light and refreshing- I typically don't like to eat ginger at sushi restaurants because it can be too potent, so this came as a surprise to me.

Just came back from Japan and have walked past this place multiple times over the years and always wanted to try. I got the okimari prix fixe menu and the sushi was very good. Fish was served at the right temperature and rice had a good texture. Chef is from Japan and the service was very attentive. I would definitely recommend anyone who needs their sushi fix to come here.
