Tried their lemon poppyseed muffin inside Po’ai cafe, and it was pretty yummy! Definitely solid vegan pastries, even more impressive it’s gluten free. Updated from previous review on 2025-08-23

This is a bakery inside of Po’ai coffee shop. They feature delicious muffins, cookies and the best banana bread! They also sell at farmers markets and can make special orders. Find their delicious waffles at Po’ai’s quarterly drag brunches too!

We had a slice of the ‘ulu banana bread at Bean About Town, Kaimuki. When we asked if we could buy a loaf, she told us about the brick and mortar store in Chinatown.
The baked goods are sold inside Po’ai, which is a coffee + other N/A drinks and handmade crafts by local vendors. It’s a cool place but we were there to buy loafs of the ‘ulu banana bread.
This is hands down the best vegan gluten free banana bread! It’s fluffy, not dense like most GF baked goods and it’s so flavorful without being overly sweet. The chocolate chip cookies are crunchy (not a fan of soft, chewy cookies) and delicious! We bought a lot as gifts to give to our non-vegan relatives to try.

So look for Po’ai - not “Ulu and Kalo Bakery.” The bakery is part of this complex but the goods are sold in Po’ai, which is a cool artisan coffee/drinks place with plant based milks. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon these baked goods somewhere in Hawaii, you are lucky! They feel clean, not too sweet, and somehow are both vegan AND gluten-free. Oh and DELICIOUS! To top it off, by using canoe plants as her primary ingredients, she is uplifting these incredible and lesser-known plants and making her community proud!

We were so happy to find a place that has gluten free treats. A little expensive, but good. We had a difficult time finding the place as there is no sign, but it's actually inside of Pono Potions store.

The Kalo Brownie is so delicious and the kalo pieces in the brownie are sooo good! I highly suggest buying a lot because they are so addicting! I can’t stop eating them :)

In love with ‘Ulu & Kalo Bakery, especially being gluten and dairy-free myself! Maile’s banana ulu bread is BOMB and so moist too!! She is superb at mindfully choosing all of the ingredients she uses, which is much appreciated as someone who is a huge advocate of healthy eating, incorporating local food & mindful consumption.

I treated myself on my birthday and bought their ulu banana bread and a lemon poppyseed bread that came with a blueberry compote. Everything was absolutely delicious, nicely packaged and the woman (Maile?) who helped me was very pleasant. The baked goods are pricey and I doubt I would spend that much money every week, but they use quality ingredients that are themselves expensive. I highly recommend trying the products from this bakery.

I tried the 'Ulu Mai'a bread and its one of the best gluten free sweets I've EVER had. I'd highly suggest and it's made with love!

I love everything from here! Maile makes so many 'ono custom desserts, like Cupcakes. Today im picking up some more 'Ulu Mai'a bread, and Kalo brownies, for a warm dessert.
