“I went here after losing a round at the National Debate Tournament this past summer; everything was so homey and quaint that it brought me back to peace and truthfully restored a lot of my energy and happiness after a big disappointment. One of the waitresses (whom I presume to be the daughter of the restaurant owners?) was so nice to me and my team and the entire establishment felt like family even thought it was only our first time there. The food was also great and I miss it a lot! I think about that place so much and I just had to finally leave a review after all of these months—and I'm excited to go back if I'm ever back in Des Moines!!“

“All around amazing! The panko on the flash fried sushi rolls is leaps and bounds above any other restaurant (full battered fry style). The Tom Kha Kai soup was delicious and not too rich! Spice levels are just right to be able to choose your heat🌶 (hubs and I owned a Thai food truck, so we know our Thai, lol)“

“Cool Basil has been a long time favorite of my wife and I. We hadn’t been there in a while when we stopped in for lunch today. The atmosphere was noticeably different. They were playing a funky smooth jazz music where every song sounded the same. I liked the previous light/classic rock mix much better. The staff seems to have completely changed since we were last in. We didn’t recognize anyone, whereas we were on a first name basis with much of the previous staff. The service was noticeably slower and less friendly. The food was still very good. I ordered my usual spice level 2 and it was very, very hot. Much hotter than it used to be. I’m just wondering if they are under new ownership or management because it is a very different experience from a year ago. I still recommend Cool Basil, it’s just not the familiar place that we loved anymore.“

“5 out 5⭐️ We had the calamari, and two noodle bowls. I got the spicy siracha & my husband had a garlic pesto. It was AMAZING. Will definitely go back. We went on a Monday around 12pm and they were pretty empty (as to be expected for a Monday afternoon) but still had good, timely service. We had our baby with us and unfortunately they don’t have a changing station in the women’s restroom. But otherwise- it was great! ❤️“

“This was a great experience all the way around! Our waitress was very good and the food was great! I had Kung poa chicken. We went at lunchtime and our food arrived in a reasonable amount of time and has just the right amount of spice. I would recommend this place!“
