We were there for our Idaho roadtrip in October 2020. Having living in New Zealand for awhile, I had to drop in any shop with the word "Kiwi" on it. Pleasantly surprised, impressed even! I can see that they put in a lot of effort making the pies. There were delicious! The desserts were so good that they missed a picture session. Lovely ambience. Worth your time.Thank you!

"Kiwi" has three distinct meanings: a fruit, a flightless bird, and a New Zealander. I presume the third definition must be applicable to Kiwi Shake and Bake (S&B), a cafe-style restaurant located on the corner of 8th and River Street in Boise's downtown area. Kiwi S&B is located 400 feet away from the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial and 600 feet away from the Boise River. Perfect spot for grabbing a quick bite after riding your bike on the Greenbelt! As with most places during the pandemic, Kiwi S&B was largely empty when I came in on a Saturday afternoon. I have not been to New Zealand nor have I tried Kiwi food, hence I can't speak about the authenticity of the meat pies. But what I can say is that I was an instant fan of the Indian Butter Chicken Pie (chicken thigh meat cooked in a mildly spiced Indian butter curry sauce, $6.50). First thing I noticed was the size. It was small (it's a hand pie). I could have easily devoured two servings as I was *hangry* that afternoon haha. It was delectable. Mildly spiced as advertised. The curry taste was subtle, not overwhelming. It wasn't runny like a pot pie and so I did not make a mess (hurray!). I absolutely loved it. I also ordered a salad and a hibiscus sour ale. Aside from meat pies, Kiwi S&B also serves desserts (Afghan biscuit, apple crumble, lamingtons, rumballs, etc.), no-nonsense coffee (advertised as "the way we do it in New Zealand"), and milkshakes. Great beers on tap as well. There's open-air seating. Tables and chairs were socially distanced. Outdoor seating was available. High ceilings. Bathroom was clean and smelled good. Lady at the register was friendly and efficient. Comfortable laid back atmosphere overall. Kiwi Shake and Bake is worth a visit for you foodies curious about Kiwi meat pies and coffee!

[covid - 10/20/2020 visit] - Riding my bike from home to my doctor visits, I kept passing this place, and remembered fondly my New Zealand visit in 2017. Found a place to park my bike and popped in about 2pm. As with all of 2020, the place was mostly empty, but there was a soccer game on the telly, and a few people social distancing, but watching and enjoying. Kiwi is known for its meat pies, and I was tempted by the curry ones, but decided to go with "steak and cheese", just to get started. Also got a New Zealand beer, which I sipped on while waiting for the pie. Time of covid, although I sat at an empty table, the pie was served in a takeout box, with plastic utensils, which wasn't great, but hey, these times. The pie was fresh, flaky, and delicious, and the beer was a nice accompaniment. Almost got two more for takeout for me and the wife, but I didn't really have a place to put it on my bike. Will be back at some point.

A glorious, soaring, industrial-chic space that spares no expense to have designed a warm, welcoming environment. Roll-down grille walls bring the outside in during warmer months. Beautiful local beers on tap, but the "meat pies" are the show. If you have a Cornish pasty in your memory wheelhouse, then you know these New Zealand versions for what they are - absolutely delicious. Prices overly reasonable so a value. Customer service all-blacks friendly. I watched a bit of UEFA Nations Cup games, which is not what you expect to find in Boise. Totally pleasing experience. Will absolutely return.

There is nothing I love more than delicious food that does not require silverware. Meat pies. Hold in your hand, delicious meat pies. Crispy flaky crust on the outside and solid meat mixture on the inside. Buttery chicken curry had flavor and wasn't overwhelming or runny like a pot pie would be. As for the cookies and cream milk shake, it was a nice smooth consistency where drinking it didn't feel like you were sucking for oxygen out of a straw. Overall, I recommend this place. They also have an assortment of desserts and beer on tap, so it makes for a great place to just chill and hang out.

Everything and anything. We had pies and took pudding of apple crisp for later on tonight. Can’t beat them.

Went here twice in one week. This place is great. I'm a big fan of meat pies and I rarely find a place that has them but was glad I stopped here before I got on a flight.

This was a great spot of Boise, with a great vibe and great outdoor seating. We stopped here for dinner after a bike ride on the green belt. I didn't love it. But I wanted to! We are a family of four, we ordered four meat pies and two beers. After tip, the bill was over $58! Fries or coleslaw did not come with any meat pie. It's at an additional charge. (So we skipped it) My son and I ordered the same thing, a steak and cheese; his came with a small "squirt" of cheese and mine didn't have any on it. *see photos* I wonder if the New Zealand dish is supposed to be exactly like this, but is not our preference. The meat was almost tasteless, didn't look like meat/steak and the pie seemed like something from a TV dinner. The garnishes on the pie crust that others posted was not to be seen on any of ours. We really loved sitting on the porch and enjoying a beer. Maybe the desserts would change my view on the whole place. But I didn't want to spend any more money on a gamble I felt I already lost. Bummer.

We really loved coming here until we had the unfortunate experience of meeting the owner. During our visit a bathroom latch broke and he approached our table about it. Unfortunately, the owner handled this encounter with us in a very unprofessional and accusatory manner. I was able to speak with the owner before leaving to let him know that because of this encounter we would no longer be patrons at his establishment. He then proceeded to tell me that my friend was a liar about breaking the latch but also informed us that the latch had previously been broken. At the end of the day he handled this encounter incredibly poorly and made it very clear that we were not welcome at his establishment. I am not sure what was gained by this encounter except to lose future business. There are several wonderful local restaurants in the area to visit and support but this is not one of them.

The food was fine but not worth going to. The owner is incredibly rude and disrespectful. By far my worst restaraunt experience.
