My deda (grandfather) Petro Drapala started the first suburban Ukrainian church outside Chicago, St Andrew Ukrainian church started in Downers Grove, from a purchased home in town and has flourished in 50+ years, he would be proud.
St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Church is a hidden gem that offers a taste of home comfort. Reviewers praise the church's cozy atmosphere, perfect organization, and secure parking. The cuisine is a highlight, with dishes like AMAZING pedogies and Guompki being standouts. Homemade Ukrainian food is also a specialty, with pierogis, potato and sauerkraut, and cabbage rolls being particular favorites. It is a place run by volunteers who create amazing food to support the church and its causes. Although it is not a typical restaurant and has some unorthodox features, visitors appreciate the pleasant staff and the effort to accommodate everyone. The church operates on Saturdays between 9 AM and 2 PM, though hours may vary, and it is recommended to check before visiting. Reviewers emphasize the food's quality, with many expressing nostalgia for the flavors that remind them of home.
