I heard French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet play selections from his Bill Evans tribute album in Chicago more than 20 years ago. I never expected to experience anything like it again. But in the Lobby restaurant at the Peninsula Hotel on December 30, 2024, pianist Anthony Forbes, with the Waltz for Debby and so much more, produced the color and texture of an Evans performance that left me shaking my head.
Thanks to the Peninsula for bringing Anthony to us and thank you Anthony for sharing with us your gift and understanding of the unique Bill Evans sound.

We went for the holiday tea for my husband’s birthday. It was my husband and I and our 4 year old daughter. The server was polite but lacked warmth. Ambiance of the place was wonderful and food was to die for! The only negative was that the server did not ask for my daughter’s order, but assumed she wanted the tea and brought that out to her within about 10 mins of us being there. We didn’t want to send it away at that point but it was a mistake to keep it as she only ate the French fries and bread of the mini burger and didn’t even try any of the desserts. We booked and paid in advance for 2 adults and reserved 1 child to order off the menu. However for some reason the server didn’t take that into account and just brought the tea for her. For a 4 year old, it’s a complete waste of money ($85). That’s the most we’ve paid for a small side of fries and a hot cocoa but what can we do now, lesson learned. Left a negative taste for me paying the bill but we will certainly be back as the high tea is extraordinary and setting unmatched in any of Chicagoland.

Never went to a tea service before but I am pretty sure I have high standards now thanks to our server Hao. He took great care of us and made sure to follow up not only on his own service but that of any others. Attentive, professional, and courteous service that I would more expect at a Michelin starred place really... Excellent experience on that aspect alone!
Now for the mini bites on the tower they were each delicious too. The pastries and chocolate items were each different and tasty in their own right. The tea of course was good and apparently this type of thing comes with sparkling wine which was good too.
I am not the target audience for a tea service but I would go back from my time here. Thanks, Hao!

For the cost I expected the breakfast to be excellent. Everything lacks flavor. Everything is undersalted. Very underwhelming.

I took my mom and daughter to High Tea for my mom's birthday. There were two musicians playing contemporary songs on violin and cello. The music was wonderful and added to the lovely ambiance of the room. The tea was delicious as was the scones, little sandwiches and sweet treats. We all enjoyed the experience.

Breakfast was outstanding, the taste exceptional, the chefs take on the Punjabi breakfast dish, aaloo chole was a delight. My latte was hot and robust. Would like to try their Chinese breakfast next.

This really felt like they just set some tables in the hallway of the hotel and called it a restaurant. The food was very disappointing, especially at the prices they were charging. You'd think at $30 a plate for eggs sausage and potatoes you would at least get real eggs, but my scrambled eggs tasted like liquid or powdered eggs. My son's stuffed French toast was more like a stuffed donut as the "bread" was deep fried. The service was only just passable. They had plenty of open tables, but sat us by the service table, which had a lot of foot traffic. This ruined our Saturday morning. Avoid this place, it's basically just low quality hotel breakfast.
