If you want to experience mid-century American comfort food, get over to Hackney's fast. I came here as a child in 1966 and it is pretty much the same place. Incredible onion loaf, great burgers and daily specials - I had thin sliced roast beef on a pretzel roll (with horseradish sauce and tasty cole slaw on the side) and it was delicious. The beef quality is unusually good and flavorful. Prices are reasonable. Tight seating, and too busy for personal service, but just use...

I love Hackneys. Their outdoor patio is charming, with lots of umbrellas for those of us who can't handle diret sun. It's set among trees. Very cozy.

The food is good. They're known for their hamburgers and their onion loaf. Four of us split the smallest size. And they give complimentary French fries. But the best thing on the menu is the grasshopper dessert.

I'd definitely recommend this place.

Slow service. Good food. We were traveling and very hungry. After not asking for our order after almost 20 minutes, we asked for the breaded mushrooms as an appetizer as we waited for our food. They brought everything out at once, which defeated the purpose.
