Trail Days Cafe and Museum offers a unique dining experience combined with a rich historical atmosphere. The owners are very friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the building, the town, and Kansas. Located in a carefully restored prairie house, the space is filled with artifacts and trinkets, including a Kaw pictograph on the doorframe, and decorated with period-appropriate items. The menu is diverse and delicious, featuring dishes that reflect the progression of settlers into the area, with recipes true to the time period, prepared and seasoned as they would have been in Council Grove. Visitors can learn about the area's history and the Rawlison-Terwilliger house from the hosts. The food is well-prepared, and the stories and history behind the dishes create a homey, welcoming, layback atmosphere that transports guests to a simpler time. Guests are encouraged to explore the space or visit the museum next door. The Bison pot roast with sweet potatoes, succotash, and Indian bread is very good, topped off with a large chocolate chip cookie. The owner, Mr. McClintock, shares rich stories, making the visit even more memorable, and the place far exceeds expectations for those passing through Council Grove.
