Sukeban, named after the leader of Tokyo's lady gangs, is a Japanese izakaya in New Orleans. The restaurant is known for its fresh take on Japanese cuisine, focusing on temaki handrolls and local seafood. Chef Jackie offers numerous raw fish options, delicately seasoned and simply plated, as well as non-meat options.
The signature blue crab temaki is a customer favorite, and the veggie temaki has won a vegan sushi award. The menu also includes unique takes on classics, such as the savory ohitashi and the potato salad, which is an unexpected star.
Sukeban is an intimate and fabulous space, though the sushi bar seating is limited. The staff is excellent, attentive, helpful, and so knowledgeable. The prices reflect the premium quality of ingredients, and an 18% gratuity is included. It is a pricey place but worth every single penny for a special celebration.
Customers praise the absolutely finest and delicious fish, including the blue fin tuna sashimi, spicy shrimp handroll, and a special tempura cracker with uni. The restaurant delivers an authentic Japanese dining experience, sourcing ingredients directly from Japan and local providers.
