Amazing small restaurant that packs a punch for the price. 10/10 food, had a pork torta and horchata. Mom won’t like this, but may be better than her own….

Let’s be real. Boston isn’t exactly overflowing with great Mexican restaurants, and when it comes to Fenway, it feels like a desert. El Pelon used to be the most decent one in the area, but its quality has gone down in the past few years. I used to order their Platos for delivery occasionally, but I recently had a bad experience with the pork and chicken platos. Both meats were dry, and the toppings lacked the punch of flavor you'd expect. Even compared to local chains like El Jefe’s, it fell flat. The Steak Platos I tried during lunch were a slight improvement, but not enough to quench my Mexican cravings.
It’s a shame that El Pelon is still considered the best takeout Mexican option near Fenway. Not sure if I’ll be going back.

This place has a very casual and fun vibe. The staff greets you with a big smile. The menu is not too large but big enough to make you want to order everything!
I never heard of Mexican sandwiches but glad I tried it. It was amazing! Their tacos and plantains are blasting with flavors! So glad we found this place.

The food here really was pretty bland, I wouldn't recommend. The chicken quesadilla was lacking really any cheese and the refried beans were just okay.

Maybe the worst chicken quesadilla I've ever had. Sad!

So at a friends recommendation I went and tried El Pelon yesterday for lunch. I decided to go there because it’s not far from my work to walk to and I was craving a burrito.
I completed an online order and indicated when prompted that I had a dairy allergy. When I got back to work, which was about a 10 to 15 minute walk, I took two bites out of my burrito and realized that there was cheese in it. Of course somebody who has EOE and a dairy allergy my throat did start to bother me.
I contacted El Pelon to tell them what had happened and hopefully have the incident rectify. Unfortunately, there was a slight language barrier on the phone, but the woman did tell me that she saw that I had marked off an allergen. I was informed to email the company so I did.
The woman who emailed me back, decided that I did not select any allergens because all of the tickets she was able to find showed that none were selected. I informed her that perhaps there was a malfunction in the systems and that they should look into it or at least when I ordered.
I was hoping for a rectification of this incident and a refund since the burrito cost me almost $15 and I had to throw it away. All I received from El Pelon was that they were right and I was wrong with no apology.
I informed them that that was my first time ever coming to their restaurant and it certainly will be my last.
I definitely would not recommend going there if you have an allergen because if you pre-order who knows that will happen. Also, my friend whose burrito was fine. He said it was OK and probably wouldn’t go back.

Meh, if you get a burrito make sure you ask them which end all the meat is on and which end has all the rice and beans.
Authentic, delicious and fun!

This review is not to bash this small business, but it wasn't what I expected. My family is Mexican, and I've had good, authentic, Mexican food. This wasn't it. I ordered a steak taco, a chicken quesadilla, and a kids cheese quesadilla. Their tacos don't have the standard ingredients you'd find on a taco - raw onions and cilantro. The flavor of the steak wasn't great. The chicken quesadilla was overwhelming with the amount of chicken that was in it. The chicken also had light shades of pink, making me put it down. My child said their meal was good, but I didn't try it. You can't really mess a cheese quesadilla up. The kids' meal came with tortilla chips, which tasted stale and old. The vibe of the restaurant was cool and different, but food wise, it was not great.

Went there on a Sunday, atmosphere was okay. My fifth time going this time I was disappointed. Food was mediocre very bland, and portion of steak was scarce. I could count five pieces for a burrito, el guapo. Queso dip reminded me of eating nachos at the movie theater. Hopefully this review helps with customer service, until then I don’t think I’ll be returning.
