Ambiance was great. Service was sloooooow (but the waitress gave us a heads-up as soon as we sat down that it would be, and even thanked us at the end for being patient because so many others had been rude that night). Drinks were yummy. Food was okay, but really expensive for what you got. Also, they said they could make many things on the menu gluten free, which sounded great in theory - but the roll I ordered came out with only two of the 7 ingredients, plus a sheet of steamed sweet potato on the side (huh?) and they still charged me full price. I paid $18 for 6 small pieces of smoked salmon and avocado. Not cool.

Been here a few times and loved it each time. I had the sushi, hibachi rice and several appetizers. Excellent food, drinks and service was professional and friendly.

Yuck. Not good sushi. Terrible service. Save your $$. Worse than cafeteria food. Empty on a Friday.

This is my must visit place in Detroit when I go on work trips! Tuesday there is a $12 roll that can't be missed.

One of my favorite sushi spots in the area. I've been here so many times over the past few years and it never disappoints!

Maru is a trendy restaurant with a lot of space. It was dead on a Wednesday night. I was able to find paid street parking around the corner without too much hassle. I ordered the strawberry basil lemonade mocktail and found it to be too sweet. The hibachi chicken was good but the rice was a little too salty. I liked the yum yum sauce and the large veggie portion. The service was good.

Excellent sushi spot hidden in downtown Detroit. I say 'hidden' because if you're not from the area -- it's not so easy to find because it occupies the first floor of a business (?) or maybe residential (?) building. Nonetheless, don't give up on your quest on getting to Maru because you will not leave disappointed. F O O D *. ocean's twelve ($27) spicy salmon, crab mix, yellowtail, asparagus, red pepper, pickled daikon, gochujang, basil oil, honey wasabi aioli, bonito furikake, and a side chef's salad * seaweed salad ($9) paired with toasted sesame seeds, cucumber *. vanilla bean cheesecake ($12) creamy cheesecake with madagascar vanilla, oat crust, lavender blueberry jam, shortbread cookie crumble Everything was splendid. From presentation to taste -- these guys absolutely nailed it. Kudos to the kitchen team for incredible execution -- it's so clear these guys take pride in every dish they put out for guests. S E R V I C E My gal was SO sweet. I sat at the bar as I was dining for one (business trip), and she exchanged stories and laughs with me the entire time. Of course, she kept checking on me and brought me anything I requested promptly. I even had a chance to waive at the chef who prepared my sushi specialty roll -- needed to give him the real time props he deserved. Really rockstar team at this spot! A M B I A N C E I would say this restaurant is more on the romantic side. Intimate and calming. It's a vibe though so don't get discouraged from bringing your extroverted party friends to this gem for some high quality sushi and drinks.

Went there with Susan and we had a wonderful time. We walked in, a little empty at first but I think we got there a little early. Great light , cool atmosphere. Was treated by the owner, I think? Sat us down at a table near the window. We ordered shareable to start then went off to a roll of sushi and a side of nigiri. Paired with some wine. Definitely recommend it. :)

Went here with a group of around four people. Waiter had super sick lashes and her outfit was very cool. We had great sushi it tasted pretty fresh overall, not many bad things to say at all about this place. Would definitely recommend it as a casual date spot or a not super duper expensive but good quality sushi. 10/10 would recommend keep it up

Went last night for my friend's bachelorette and my friend made reservations for 9 but when we got there there was only 8 seat which no big deal we just asked for an extra chair to end cap our table. We waited around 15 minutes and kept looking around the restaurant for our sever to greet us but nothing. It wasn't until I had to ask a random sever if they knew who our sever was and she said she would go and find out and came back saying our server would be with us any second. Five minutes later our server finally showed up and said that the host didn't tell them that we were their table which the host should've done if your seating someone out of their section. They quickly took our drink orders after giving us water and then drinks took a bit to come out as well. We ordered appetizers which was the seaweed salad, crab Rangoon dip and gyoza that took forever to come out, probably around 10 minutes before our entrees came out. Our server said that the kitchen was backed up which is understandable since it's around the holidays and there was a big 18 top party at the same time as us but there was tables around us who had gotten sat after us and orders after us and still got their apps and entrees out before our apps even came out.The food was good but not really worth the price, my teriyaki chicken was a little bit on the burnt side but I didn't even want to say anything after the long wait we already with our food coming out had but the blueberry lavender lemonade was really good. Our server did leave us a whole pitcher of water and gave our bride a dessert on the house which was nice but they didn't check up much on us throughout our meal and it felt like they kept coming up with excuses when anything went wrong. When we asked if they could spilt our bill up they said they would have to talk to a manager because they usually can't do that with parties over 5 but luckily the manager did and we paid and left the moment we got our cards back. Overall it took around 3 hours, mostly due to waiting on the server and food so we had to switch our plans for the rest of the night since it took longer in the restaurant to begin with. I know anything food wise isn't the server's fault since I work at a busy, overpriced restaurant as well but the service wasn't the good either and that might've been since we were basically a surprise table for the server but it shouldn't have been an excuse. I would've given Maru one star but the lemonade was really good so an extra star!

The service was TERRIBLE. The hostess could not take even find us a table to sit at and had another waitress help us. Waiting for a table took 25-30 minutes alone. We waited 1 and a half for our food. Although the food was good, the portions were so small that it looked like fairy food. Every waiter/waitress seemed to just be confused as to what was going on. We were catfished by this seemingly high end restaurant. Would never go here again. (Ginger slapped tho).

Yummy food but a bit overpriced! The service is a bit slow and even though there were many empty tables, the wait was still an hour wait at 5:30pm. Ended up sitting at the bar and that was good enough.

The location for Maru Sushi is one of the best, with it being nestled right in the Campus Martius area. It's got a great ambiance and it's good for a fancier occasion. The sushi is good, but not on par with some of the other notable places in Detroit or the surrounding metro area. I do think it's overpriced for the quality, but I think that's more because of how nice the actual restaurant and the space is. The wait times can get pretty long because it's so busy, so keep that in mind when looking to dine here that it will likely be a longer meal.

Went here for a friends birthday dinner. I absolutely loved it! It's a beautiful , updated, stylish restaurant. All the sushi tasted fresh, and delicious. The tofu portions for their miso soup was the biggest I've ever received where it was actually large chunks in it. Our server was awesome, she was very accommodating and helpful to me when I asked about different saki that I wanted to try. The restaurant itself was extremely accommodating due to the lateness of the party, we stayed well past closing hours. For that alone, I have to give them five stars. I would like to go back try their fried rice!

This is hands down one of the best sushi spots in Detroit and ive had sushi from all over. The service is kind and there were many times i didn't know the roll i had before and they were willing to identify it for me through blurry photos! I highly recommend the crouching tiger and the garlic shrimp.
