Nice that the vegan options are marked and probably one of the only restaurants in town serving tempeh. However, after coming here somewhat regularly for the last few years, they seem to have implemented a "vegan tax". The vegan protein option (tempeh) now has an up-charge of $3.50. Hate when places do this but it's getting more and more common around town. Anyway, fine in a pinch I guess.
This place fell off. I got the California burrito, which I have had before, but it was completely different this time. It lacked flavor and was way too salty. Not to mention the upcharge. The quality of the burrito was not worth the $16 I paid for it. Just disappointing. Service was average. Nothing life changing.

Ordered a bean and rice burrito. Took it to a table to eat and after a couple bites found it very bland. When I opened it up there were no beans. Even with beans it would have been very very bland.

This used to be one of my go to spots in Grand Rapids because of their delicious California burrito. However, a few months ago they increased their price of the burrito and decreased the quality. They got rid of the melt in your mouth queso and replaced it with a melted shredded cheese and it completely changed the dynamic. I know this seems nit-picky but I was passionate about the California burrito and now it’s not worth the $3 price increase.
Honesty & Integrity define this restaurant!
The food is delicious & servers are friendly.
There are many options in the downtown market to choose to spend your $ & your time.
Give this little restaurant a try, I think you will be happy that you did!

Went to order tacos and no one was present. So placed order on kiosk which does not allow to add items to tacos such as lettuce or tomatoes. The girl showed up after I ordered so asked her to add she said okay. The salsa area was a complete disgusting mess. Got food which took longer then me going to another place and ordering a dozen wings and additional items and came back and still not ready when there was no one else waiting for food yet. I ordered 2 tacos at 4.00 each and chips and salsa for 3.75 and my order was over $17. Bland no seasoning and upon opening my order it was 2 tacos with beef in a tortilla with nothing else and the chips salsa and guacamole all crammed into a tiny paper box. Try another place and save your money.

This has been a favorite spot of mine for years, so I was extremely disappointed to see that Luna bought it. Prices shot up and quality went down. It no longer makes sense to go here when there are better Mexican places in the city and better value at other restaurants in the market 🤷
Edit: I went back and checked old credit card statements, and the price definitely went up for the California burrito. They also changed liquid queso to melted shredded cheese. Can't speak to any other menu items.

Do yourself a favor and visit any of the other taco el cunado locations. It will be more authentic, better tasting, and half the price.

Make sure buy a drink with these taco's, because you'll need it to choke them down. Very dry. Not even very tasty. Not a fan. This is my second attempt here. I really wanted to like it. Both times disappointed.

Delicious tacos, the ones with roast beef and tripe are the tastiest!
Grand Rapids’ Downtown Market is an experience worth visiting. It is an interior shopping mall of cuisine reminiscent of the Halles of Lyon in France. There are a multitude of restaurants to select all with a variety of styles of food. Tacos El Cunado is the resident Mexican restaurant option at the Downtown market. For a plant-based patron, they have a selection of fillings: tempeh, nopales (castus), and rice & beans. It is awesome to have options. I selected three of the cactus tacos. It was great that they served vegan options and had them listed as such on their menu. The downside was that these were possibly the saltiest tacos I have ever tasted. It was so strong that it was almost unedible. I admit, this was my first time having cactus in a taco, and maybe they are supposed to be prepared this way. I have not gone back to try the other options having had such a sad experience last time. If I return I will make sure to try the tempeh and revise my review.
We had catering for our wedding in the downtown market greenhouse and it was simply amazing! Such great quality food and Tracey was so great to work with!

I'm blown away by how low the ratings are on this place (esp. compared to others like stan's, condado, barrio, etc.). This location always brings the heat. The flavors are out of this world. It's for sure a step up in quality compared to most other taquerias around town.

So I went here with my meat eating family members multiple times and they absolutely love the pork tacos, pickled onions and salsa bar. I tried the rice and beans and nopales tacos last week and the rice and beans were solid. The nopales was SO spicy , I could not eat it. It looked like minced cactus and onion, but I feel like it was minced jalapeños and onions and no cactus. So I was upset for the price that it was inedible to me. The rice and beans tacos were fresh and filling.
