They've adopted the scan-at-your-table method of ordering, while servers still get an automated 20% tip. Honestly.. it just doesn't work for this type of place, and my group ran into numerous issues, with the staff not finding ways to help out.Wondering why servers deserve 20% when they're just bringing waters? ... meanwhile, servers stood in corners of the bar having side convos with each other. Happy to pay 20% for a server interacting with me.I've been to surly numerous times before this, and no doubt, the food is amazing. But no. I won't be going back anymore. Not with this stupid Toast at your table and lack of actual service.Editing to add - I paid $9.71 for a 10 oz pour of a 7% mediocre IPA. Lmk if you feel like that's a good deal. Dropping 1 star for that.

A fine experience. Many rooms to visit and many drinks. Good food. New friends to run elbows with. Bottoms up.

What is it with businesses that think adding an automatic 20% is acceptable?? TIPPING SHOULD BE OPTIONAL AND UP TO THE CUSTOMER TO DECIDE THE AMOUNT. I understand during Covid it was needed but, not now! Surly’s owners are “padding” their pockets and still using Covid as an excuse to do so. Also, bringing a glass of water to everyone without even asking? Most people don’t even touch it, what a waste of water!

If I lived in the area, I’d be here often. They know what they’re doing in every aspect. The service, food quality, location, atmosphere are all top notch. I almost forgot to mention the beer which is excellent

Surly Brewing Company is a hidden gem for craft beer lovers! I had the pleasure of trying their unique brews, including the refreshing En Agave La Vida and the citrusy Grapefruit Supreme - both absolute favorites. The highlight of my visit was definitely the brisket queso with avocado chunks and chips. The combination of flavors was out of this world - a perfect balance of cheesy goodness, tender brisket, creamy avocado, and crunchy chips. The atmosphere was vibrant and friendly, and the staff was knowledgeable and attentive. I can't wait to go back and sample more of their delicious offerings!

Sorely disappointed. This was our first stop on vacation, and we were very much looking forward to trying the ever-famous Surly Brewing. We weren’t fans of the overall hands-off service approach, no flights offered and 2-taster limit. The two brews I tried were average but that was all I was allowed to try, otherwise I would have explored further.Sad to say, we would not go back.

Awesome brewery with lots and lots of good beer to try. They also have wood fire pizzas upstairs which are also incredible. Anyone should make a stop if you're in the area.

Awesome food & beer. The service was TOP NOTCH! You can use the QR code to order both food & beer or order beer from the bar line. Surley adds a 20% service charge to all orders. The staff was super attentive and even our kids commented on how quickly our food arrived.

Only problem with Surly is the parking sitch. It’s TOO popular and the lot is always full every time we go.But that said, it’s truly a wonderful place. Huge to say the least. Eclectic amd artsy decor, enormous taproom, spectacular outdoor area including tables and greenery, and lots of space for kids to run around. Most recently our 5 and 2 year olds played stacking flat rocks ensconced by a little tucked away pine grove. The food is fast and delicious, and the beer hits the spot. We’ll be back again and again.

Great place to meet up with friends.

The fried chicken sandwich is surprisingly good. Really love the tangy sauce they used. The tacos, while overpriced, are quite tasty.

We stopped here last weekend for food and drinks with some friends. This is one of my favorite breweries. We ordered half of the food on the menu, and every dish was delicious. The environment is super cool, and the staff is fast and friendly. We will be stopping here anytime we are in town.

Our bartender was awesome! He had a vast knowledge of their product and was very encouraging to our group about trying many of the beers before purchase. We absolutely loved him. There was one bar back, however, that was absolutely rude. I won't give the details but he was the reason we left and went elsewhere. What a bummer!

The beer was good and the food was average. I’m posting a 1 star review because of the way my party was treated by the staff. We were having a good time but when it came time to pay the bill, the staff took photos of our credit card against our consent, but being new to the country, we didn’t know if this was a standard practice in the US or not. However, having been to countless other breweries ever since, I can definitely say that this is not the case. We are Indian, and this was the only visible difference between us and the other diners, and I did not see this behavior with any of the other diners that day. Much as I hate to jump to conclusions, I must say that this place probably treats people of certain ethnic persuasions with suspicion as compared to others. This was the first brewery I visited in America and to be treated like this was downright disgusting. I will very strongly recommend against this place if you don’t look American. Luckily there are plenty of other amazing breweries in Minneapolis with warm and friendly staff who don’t make you feel like a common criminal because of the way you look.Edit: this happened around a year back and I’m posting this now because I was recently reminded of it by a friend who asked me how this place was. One can only hope they’ve hired more “educated” staff by now lol
