It's a cruel fate to fall in love with beignets in Kansas City. The beignets at Southern Kitchen are correctly layered and very tasty. We got the sampler platter and the gumbo and corn chowder were my favorite. The corn bread is sweet, as all cornbread should be. The unfortunate news as that the proprietors are giving up the gumbo. It was crazy busy this weekend after the Martin City Telegram published the sad news. KC will again be without a taste of New Orleans. The owner took our order and you could see the delight and frustration that comes with owning a business like this. His young assist was busting her behind to get food out. He personally apologized for the delay in service that I didn't notice. We were in and out in less than 45 minutes. Considering how busy it was, this was impressive. I wonder if the strip mall location hurt. Ordinarily when I hear Martin City, I think steakhouses and train tracks. It's too bad March may be their slow march to another adventure. The food is a good portion and a good value.

I drove by the sign saying they were open for quite some time but one day I just wanted a beignet and they had them. I got their grilled fish and I was hooked. I love the seasoning and it calls me back all the time. I haven't been in awhile as we aren't going out for lunch as much due to the economy, but I really miss the fish. The owners are wonderful, the place basic but the food is why you will return over and over. I really need to get back there soon. The sides are good, they have most New Orleans foods and they have Abita Amber beer, my favorite from Louisiana in case I got when it isn't lunch. Really, try it, I bet you'll be back. I should have gone yesterday for Fat Tuesday but totally forgot.

Nice people/ horrible food. I'd passed there several times. Meaning to stop in, but they always seemed to be closed. I ordered a cup of clam chowder & a shrimp po'boy. It took a "very" long time. When I got home, I found the chowder was grossly thick, barely stirrable & tasted sour. I flushed it down the toilet. The bun/bread/baguette for the po'boy looked & felt stale. So did the lettuce & tomatoes served as condiments. I also got an order of very pale fries. Not worth reheating.

Loved their food. It's amazing!!! I go there every time I'm near there. Love everything on the menu especially the corn cakes.

Great food, nice and clean seating area and super nice staff whom I'm guessing are all somehow owners or something bc they are really extra great. Been here a couple of times and each time someone from in the kitchen has come out to ask how the food was, etc.Kid-friendliness: Great for kids!

Simple order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. Great sized portions for the price, great flavor, and service was real friendly. We had shrimp & grits and jambalaya. Both were very good. For sides we had mac & cheese and cornbread. The cornbread may have stolen the show and was the best I have had at a restaurant. Definitely will go back as there are many more items we want to try.

Had a craving for some Cajun food and this hit the spot. Everything had a nice level of heat and the shrimp were nicely cooked. Corn bread was sweet and tasty. Very reasonable prices for the portions.

Food was good. They reserved the one outside table so I could bring my dog with us. We had a fried chicken sandwich and fries fish sandwich. Service was super friendly.

I seen southern and instantly thought chicken, pork chops, Mac and cheese... American style foods.Pleasantly surprised that it gave New Orleans jambalaya, shrimp, fried Crawfish tails options. The food was great, served steaming hot and fresh, customer service wonderful, great options (fried or grilled on mostly everything). Worth the price, atmosphere was very laid back/ chill. Was my first time and I'll be back without a doubt. Only complaint would be give quarter slice lemons not slithers so can actually squeeze on fish/ seafood easier. But it worked out.

The atmosphere is great, service great, but the baked beans are exceptional. I don't know what the secret is. Pablo always points out I like them, and I always say "see you again tomorrow at 4:30 Pablo". I tell everyone I know about these beans. I can't say enough.

My first time trying - I had the shrimp and grits and honestly the flavor rivals Drago's in New Orleans . My husband had the sampler platter with jambalaya, red beans/rice and shrimp étouffée - that was his favorite ! Looking forward to trying other dishes as well. We will definitely be back and be telling all of our friends!

Lacks flavor! Very disappointed as I expected so much more. If you've ever been to New Orleans or had real southern gumbo, you know this is not it. I Will not be back

I tried the shrimp and grits it came with four shrimp, sausage and cheese and it was pretty good and a bit spicy! Overall the flavor was good and food tasted fresh. I'd recommend this place!

Rediscovered this gem. We hadn't visited in awhile but have no idea why. We've gotten takeout twice in the last couple weeks and both times the food was outstanding! Blackened Fish Po Boy is awesome. The hot chicken lives up to it's name and the Gumbo is terrific. Nice people, great food and a fair price. It's in our regular rotation for takeout from now on.
