El Guanáco Taquería & Pupusería is a hidden gem serving authentic Salvadoran and Mexican dishes. The food and customer service are amazing, with everyone being nice and welcoming. The restaurant feels very authentic, though the interior is a bit cramped. The menu is mostly in Spanish, and the waitresses don't speak English all that great but will use Google translate to help. Standout meals include the asada con queso, revuelta pupusas, Honduras tacos, Pollo tacos, and Carne asada fries piled high with toppings. The chips and salsa are made in house, with two kinds of salsa—spicy and spicier—and the queso is the literal icing on the steak. The pineapple fresca drink and chorizo queso are also recommended. Everything is delicious, hot, and fresh, offering incredible value, with meals like two revuelta pupusas, two chicharrón con queso pupusas, and chicken tacos for only $21. Hard to find pupusas in St. Louis, and the restaurant has a big variety. A lot is à la carte, so customers can try a few different things. Call ahead for pickup orders.
