Here’s what you should know before visiting San Jose Mexican Restaurant.
Located in downtown Webster Groves near the train tracks, this spot was quiet on a Monday night with easy parking — as long as you don’t miss the small garage entrance.
The food had great flavor, the fajitas came out sizzling with plenty of veggies, and the chips and salsa were hot, thin, and crispy. The margarita was very citrus-forward, and while the rice was a bit dry, the beans and sides were solid.
One note: the front booths are very small, so if you want more space, I’d recommend asking for a table.
Overall, a good option if you’re in the area and know what to expect.

My family was excited to try San José in Webster, especially since the Crestwood location is fantastic. However, this location fell short of our expectations. The chips and salsa were delicious, but our actual meals were disappointing. Both my tamale and chicken enchilada were extremely mushy, cold, and had a sauce that tasted like it was canned. My child’s chicken quesadilla was dripping with grease and almost inedible. The service was also mediocre. It took at least 5-10 minutes for the staff to acknowledge our presence, even though it wasn’t that busy. I do not like writing negative reviews, but we were simply disappointed with our experience.

Slowest service ever and we tried to call them when right near us and they keep walking. Terrible service and they were not busy

Our first and, likely, last time trying San Jose Mexican Restaurant, located in the heart of Webster Groves. We were at an appointment in the area and wanted something to eat.
Sadly, Nothing was impressive here.
The entire place has a dank, musty smell, ESPECIALLY the entryway and bathrooms. The service was subpar. Our server, a man with long hair, took our order and then disappeared. We had to just leave cash because we were never given a bill.
The food wasn’t terrible. The Chips & Salsa was decent— the chips were a tad stale but the salsa was nice and spicy. My Taco & Enchilada was alright. The taco shell tasted store-bought. My Mom said her chicken dish was “nothing remarkable”.
If the service and atmosphere were better, we’d actually come back. We weren’t expecting amazing, super authentic Mexican food… but the least we could get was some service.

We had a group in for lunch, like 7 of us. When we asked for our check the dude literally flapped his arms when we needed separate checks. Food was mediocre

Here now, won’t be back. The food was lukewarm at best. I couldn’t finish it all had them take it away.

Willing to give another shot
Stopped in after a morning at Grant's Farm. The decorations are great and there is a lot of room inside. My daughter said her food was good but I ordered the Tacos Al Pastor and the meat was very dry and some of the pieces were tough like jerky. Our waitress was nice but I wasn't impressed.

Decided to try a new place, unfortunately I didn't look at the reviews. If you want true Mexican food... DO NOT come here. If you want TexMex, this is the place to go. Anywhere else your food would come with rice and beans instead of having to buy the sides separately. The atmosphere is just not it. I shouldn't look up and see mason jars hanging as lights. They don't have horchata and its not necessarily a big red flag but even restaurants that arent great have the drink. Chicken and beef are bland and for the price I would just go to Taco Bell or to The Shack for brunch because they have a better burrito than this place. When it says it comes with tomatoes, it means it comes with a slice of a tomato and if you are looking at a fajita burrito, you might as well just stick to the fajitas in general. Its like the chef doesnt know how to use spices. The lady who was our waitress was nice but every other woman had a pissed off look on their faces. Im just disappointed that this Mexican Restaurant is in Webster. I have worked as a waitress at a Mexican Restaurant and I could've prepared better food than here.
