“Today I decided to treat my wife to ice cream in the middle of the day. I know, wild man! 😂 Usually we venture into town after dinner to get our ice cream fix, but today we stopped by just after noon.

Going during the day definitely has one big advantage: it’s much less crowded. During the warmer months, evenings can get pretty busy, so be prepared for a longer line and a crowded parking lot.

My only real complaint is the awning. It doesn’t provide much protection from the sun while you’re waiting in line until you get closer to the ordering windows. On a hot summer afternoon, you’re definitely going to feel it.

The ordering process is pretty simple. They’ll call you up to one of four windows, you place your order, and then wait at that same window for them to bring it out. The staff has always been friendly and does a good job getting orders out in a reasonable amount of time. Honestly, one of the biggest things that slows the line down is people waiting until they reach the window to decide what they want!

There’s some outdoor seating available, or you can always retreat to the AC and eat in your parked car. You can also order online ahead of time and pick it up.

With only a handful of ice cream options around the Southern Pines/Aberdeen area, Handles is definitely worth having in the rotation. Just remember: midday = shorter line, evening = bigger crowd!“
