Habanero Mexican Grill is a new and worthy successor in a nondescript shopping plaza location that is bigger than it looks from the outside. The restaurant boasts a large menu with everything you’d expect and then some, including tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and chimichangas, so you can find something for anyone. Specific dishes like the vegetarian fajita, beef chimichanga, steak quesadilla, and the tropical—with chicken, bacon, shrimp, pineapple, and peppers—are all noted as tasty, delicious, well-balanced, and perfectly cooked. The meat in the quesadilla is tender and the shrimp are flavorful. Appetizers like the refreshing pepinos (cucumbers with salt, lime, and chili powder) and the absolutely wonderful chips are highlights. For those who like hot stuff, the hot sauce plate or hot salsa platter is a banging recommendation, though the standard salsa is described as smooth, oddly sweet, and unimpressive—a relatively small bone to pick. The service is fast, friendly, welcoming, excellent, and attentive with a surprisingly fast kitchen. Early indications suggest Habanero has the potential to be one of the city’s unheralded, reliable, and worthy IYKYK spots. It is still new and does not have a liquor license yet.
