Banh & Bo offers a good food experience with a casual and light atmosphere and fantastic, hospitable customer service. The menu includes items such as the $12 Bahn Mi Signature, a $9 grilled pork sandwich, and a $9 grilled pork sandwich. The Bahn Mi Signature was a tad salty with the minced pork and could have been more caramelized for texture, but both sandwiches were good. It is worth a try for those who generally like the mixed cold cuts flavors, though the size and amount of ingredients in the $12 sandwich may not warrant the $3 difference compared to the other $9 sandwiches. The $4.95 crinkle cut fries were good, enjoyed for being soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.
The chicken pho was excellent as a whole, offering a pleasantly surprising depth of flavor. The broth was very homey, very light, and paired well with bean sprouts for a nice earthy undertone to balance the savory chicken broth. Jalapeños added a spicy kick and a contrast in texture to the onion and rice noodles, while lime added a hint of acidity. However, the pho suffered from the chicken, which had an odd, off-putting aftertaste that was not a result of the broth's flavoring. The sauces provided at each table were excellent; a black sauce that reminded one of soy sauce was a great way to counteract the chicken's flavor and was absorbed well into the rice noodles.
The drinks were great too. The $5.25 cold viet coffee for a large size is a deal, with no sugar modification available. An additional $0.75 is charged for boba. The restaurant does not have Coca Cola products, offering instead a $2.50 bottled Pepsi. In general, the drink prices are comparable to a standard boba shop but are cheaper as the drinks come in large sizing. Overall, this is a nice experience and a restaurant to visit again, especially given the lack of Vietnamese spots in Newark.
