“A little confusing to locate; the sign for Black Anchor is on the wall of the stall for Crepes & More. Even when mapping it and standing practically in front of it, we had difficulty finding this. Being avid coffee drinkers, we came to this boardwalk ONLY for this coffee house, which wasn't a house at all, just a stall. There's no seating. I'm not sure if this was formerly just a coffeehouse and they've changed directions with their business? The coffee was good.“

“Pulled into Milk Crate Coffee off Route 70 in Lakewood the other morning to knock out some work and grab a quick fix. From the outside, the building has a funny setup that looks like an old hotel converted into a business park, with the shop taking over what probably used to be the main lobby and dining hall.

Inside, though, the vibe is totally unique. They have retro light fixture setups, art on the walls, and cushioned curved benches near the front. They even have lightbulbs on the ceiling that spell out the word coffee in massive six foot letters over the main room, which I did not even spot until I looked up directly at the lights. Even the bathroom has a bright pink neon sign on the wall, so they definitely leaned into the quirky decor.

When it comes to the actual coffee, these guys know what they are doing. I love that you can pick your own single origin beans and have them make a custom pour over right then and there. I went with a Honduran light roast, and it hit the spot while I sat at a table with my laptop. The staff was knowledgeable, and happy to chat about the coffee options, if you find one of the employees that knows coffee very well.

To go with the brew, I grabbed a chocolate chip scone. Now, the coffee was pretty solid, but the scone was average at best. It had that boxed, reheated feel to it rather than fresh baked from scratch. That said, plenty of people around me were ordering hot meals that looked really good, so it seems like a popular local hangout for a full breakfast.

All in all, Milk Crate Coffee is a cool, comfortable spot to set up camp for an hour, enjoy a well made pour over, and take in the eccentric surroundings. I would definitely swing back by for the coffee alone.“

“If you're cruising through Uptown Asbury Park you must stop by here. Booskerdoo isn’t just your standard pitstop for caffeine; this is their main roasting mothership, and you can see (and smell when roasting) the serious business the second you walk up to the door.

Let's talk about that liquid gold. I ordered a hot latte with whole milk, finished off with a quick dusting of cinnamon over the foam. One sip and I was hooked, we’re talking a rich, velvety microfoam floating over espresso so balanced it could walk a tightrope. Naturally, because I never meet a light roast I don't like, I got a cup of their Guatemalan El Panal to go. Bright, clean, and really smooth. It’s proof these folks know exactly what they’re doing with a coffee bean. (I hope to get there some day in my micro roaster at home. lol).

Now, I didn't initially plan on grabbing a bite, but the pastry case is a complete trap. While those peanut butter and jelly bars almost lured me in, I ended up pairing my latte with a fresh cranberry scone.

It was a match made in coffee heaven. Flaky, tender, delightfully buttery, and studded with cranberries, it’s the exact kind of pastry that turns a quick coffee run into a full-blown Sit back and relax) lingering experience.

The real showstopper inside, though, is the giant Diedrich roaster sitting right out on the floor alongside literal pallets of green coffee beans. You see Booskerdoo beans popping up at spots all over the Jersey Shore, so seeing the actual industrial engine where the magic happens is really cool. My only minor tragedy of the day? The roaster wasn't firing while I was there. I would’ve loved to hear that machine humming and soak in the full aroma of fresh-roasting beans, but hey, that just gives me an excuse to come back tomorrow.“

“While visiting family in New Jersey, I decided to check out Asbury Park Roastery on a Sunday morning and was thoroughly impressed.

As I pulled up, I could see someone in the attached roastery next door working on a fresh batch of coffee beans. Inside, the shop has a fantastic selection of retail items including bagged teas, fresh coffee, Chemex pour overs, AeroPresses, and even a sleek vacuum sealing coffee container that I am strongly considering purchasing. They also have a few neat branded shirts on display along the wall.

The seating area is very comfortable with roughly 15 tables that accommodate anywhere from two to four people, along with soft lounge chairs and end tables. It proved to be a wonderful spot to sit back, listen to the background music, and do some weekly planning. I also noticed they had beach style chairs you could take outside to enjoy the lovely weather, however it was drizzling a bit when I arrived so I opted for the comfy leather chair inside.

I ordered a latte and was thrilled that they served it in a real mug upon request. The coffee used in the drink had a darker roast profile with a bit more bitterness than my usual preference, but it was still delicious and clearly high quality.

To go with my drink, I picked a fresh cranberry scone from their display of pastry options. The scone was fantastic and paired perfectly with the warm drink. I always appreciate a coffee shop that roasts its own beans in house, and seeing the operation in action made the visit even better. “We have gone here every weekend ever since we found out about this place! I wish they opened earlier than 11 am :( - Their coffee (specifically lattes) are out of this world. Before, LaVazza had my favorite lattes, but now CB does! Not only that, but $4-5 for an amazing good sized-coffee? I have probably had 15 by now and I have never had a bad one. I've tried most of their specialty candy bar lattes but the Jack Frost is my favorite - Service is outstanding. I've been served by multiple employees and so far they've all been extremely nice and helpful. Both dine-in and take-out. They are also very fast - Food is also extremely good, but, in my opinion a bit too expensive for what it is. However, the size is decent and it tastes very high quality. 15% lower price would be better. The chicken parm sandwich and caesar salad are my favorites and one of the best I've ever had (longhorn beats their caesar). Food has not disappointed so far - Environment is also nice. Clean area, clean bathrooms, and bonus that it's not always jam packed so it's quite peaceful Food I have tried and enjoyed: quesadilla, grilled chicken nachos, fries, caesar salad, classic pizzette, cheeseburger, sicily stuffed chicken wrap, chicken brushette wrap, chicken broccoli cheddar wrap, chicken cordon bleu wrap. The biggest con about this location is the exhaust in the space is absolutely awful. There is a constant cloud of smoke from their cooking in the kitchen and it doesn’t properly exhaust out of the space. You will 100% leave smelling like fried food and it will be on your clothes, hair, etc the whole day. I almost had to walk out the other day because my eyes were tearing. Also, many people come in here to work on their laptops which is fine but if you are coming to meet a friend for coffee and chat, there most likely won’t be any seats. If you can grab one of the few seats outside, I would go for that.“
