“If you’re coming from Albuquerque and headed to Roswell in search of Extraterrestrial encounters take the road less traveled and make your way through the little town of Vaughn. You’ll need to stop for gas because there hasn’t been any stations for 113 miles and there won’t be for another 92. On the edge of town by the periphery of the Twilight Zone sits a place made of Chrome and Neon Lights. It’s no gimmicky location. This is one of those aged Diners of yore where the dinner rush is made up of railroad men coming off the trains that cross there, where locals come in for a cup of coffee, and Edward Hopper sits in the corner with a sketchpad and a plate of eggs and bacon sitting before him. It’s almost a lonely place; sitting there by itself in the whole empty near-forgotten place. But the lights are warm as the waitress refills your coffee and the cook sits down at the counter in between customers to drink their own cup. It was two days from now that my family and I stepped into Penny’s Diner. We had come a long way, and there was a long way still to go. So we stayed for a meal (it was the real diner stuff of eggs, bacon, hash browns and pancakes). We let the coffee and Diner take effect before we paid the bill and went our way. They left us with a warm, nostalgic feeling, and faintly melancholic as the road widened between us. We didn’t have any strange encounters on that dark road out to Roswell. We didn’t see any strange lights or silver disks. The closest encounter we had with anything seen in 1947 outside of Roswell was the object made of Chrome and Neon lights sitting on the outskirts of Vaughn New Mexico….“
