Worth the trip down to south Brooklyn. Saw the rice balls on social media and had to try. Old world character, with a no frills diner style setup. Incredibly diverse selection of fresh, tasty food. Even the salad was flavorful. Easily one of the top meals I’ve had in New York. Hearty, yet light, and beautifully plated. Try the eggplant parm with rigatoni, the meatloaf with potatoes and mushroom gravy, and the rice balls.

Our waitress “Caterina” was friendly and prompt with our food. I told her I didn’t eat fish so when my family ordered clams & sauce, she put the dish on the other end of the table and brought me a rice ball special - which was delicious l. She was very fast with replacing the empty plates and periodically asked us if we were OK.
One thing I really like about this restaurant is that it is wheelchair accessible. No steps or uphill ramp- the whole place is flat. Caterina was very helpful also by helping me transfer to my seat and she put my wheelchair in a safe spot out of the way.

Just as we remember it when we were going as kids. Octopus salad was delicious and tender. We took an order home for the kids. I live in NJ, so it was a real treat being in the area. We were the last customers of the night, and the service was great.
Visiting Joes of Avenue U has become a tradition amongst my in-laws whenever they visit NYC. Each time I’ve gone, the staff have been immensely welcoming and kind. I appreciate how they really make you feel at home.
The food is unbelievable! This is the best Sicilian restaurant I’ve been to in all of NYC. I especially enjoy their panelle! The panelle with a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of salt is my favorite way to enjoy it. It is also really good in between bread as pictured. The seeded rolls they have are genuinely amazing. While I don’t eat meat, I’m told the Arancini balls and squid salad are phenomenal! Definately give this place a try for authentic Sicilian dishes!
