Bodai Vegan serves imperial-style Chinese cuisine on Midtown's east side. The food is light and clean; the chef prepares ingredients minimally so you taste the natural, earthy flavors. Served as a progressive prix fixe menu, dishes arrive one after the other. The restaurant offers a 9-course tasting menu featuring unique dishes like the five-flavor plate, cucumber-sauced mushrooms, Bodhi Buddha soup, rich matsutake mushrooms, sweet-and-sour riblets, and a dessert called “Nectar of the Core.” Mushroom dishes stand out the most, including Stichotas japonicus, pan-seared boletus, and Nepal mushroom quinoa. Every course is meticulously made with low oil, low sugar, and focused on natural taste. Service is smooth; the waitresses are courteous and professional, introducing the culture and chef’s thoughts behind each dish. The space is fully wheelchair friendly with wide pathways. The decor is interesting, with lanterns, plants, calligraphy artworks, and pottery exhibits. The restaurant has a very private setting with no large sign; guests push a doorbell to enter. It is strictly reservation-only. The $99 per person price is well worth it for the experience, though drink prices are high. Overall, Bodai offers a unique dining experience blending Buddhist philosophy with royal vegetarian cuisine.
