Chalong Southern Thai, located on 9th Avenue, offers a compelling reminder that genuine surprise remains possible even in a city saturated with Thai cuisine. The food rips and guests are happy they ate there. The crab curry has a standardized Thai medium spice rating (unalterable); the texture of the crab is like a marshmallow in how softly tender it is—meaty, pillowy, delicious. The roti is flakey, soft, and maintains a perfect amount of chew, not oily but with a fattiness that has guests craving more. Other recommended meals include the braised beef, squid ink rice, Chilean sea bass, garlic chicken wings, pomelo salad, Thai iced tea, mango sticky rice, greens, and Thai iced tea ice cream. The kitchen demonstrates clarity of purpose, presenting regional character without undue concession. Service is of a high order; the bar staff are all kind and humorous, and waiters are extremely attentive, serving water without being asked and replacing plates often. The restaurant has a great vibe with lots of natural light from windows and cool light fixtures. It can be a little busy and loud, and the full party must be present to be seated. Chalong uses halal meat and is considered the most authentic Thai place in New York by Southeast Asian guests. It stands comfortably among the top restaurants visited and invites both appreciation and return.
