Very good food, nothing mind blowing tho. I think the chips that came with the hot dog could benefit from more crispyness, it was a tiny bit chewy. And the string beans salad was delicious but way too simple, especially for that price.
The drinks were also yummy.
The staff were super caring and friendly, and I think that was the best part of our dining experience. Always appreciate nice hosts.

I’m not exactly sure how I feel about this place. Everything was fresh and well prepared, but overall it felt a bit overpriced for what it was. I tried the blue fish dish it was more like a dip and while it was interesting, the flavor was very fish-forward. If you’re really into strong fishy flavors, you might enjoy it, but for me, it was a bit overwhelming. Just something to keep in mind depending on your taste.

We are big fans. It's a neighborhood gem, which as neighbors, we are thrilled to have. Staff has been consistent over years, and actually remembers the customers. What a novelty for NYC. Food is always interesting and full of fresh and healthy choices. Would recommend it to anyone.

Best food experience I've ever had from top to bottom, an absolute sensory delight. Pete Wells was 100% correct, it was hands-down, the best roasted chicken of my life. The meat was both crispy and tender, not to mention seasoned just perfectly. Life changing. Every dish we tasted exceeded expectation and I have NO NOTES.
The other life-changing item was the heirloom tomato toast with smoked mayo. Y'all, it was the essence of a BLT with no bacon! What magic they employ in the kicthen!! The tomatoes were perfect, salted accordingly, and peppered with tiny chives. Mmm mmm mmmmmm.
This place excels in every category. I'm definitely coming back because I'm afraid I'm going to miss the next great seasonal item. Oh yes, their menu evolves and honors local artisans with only the freshest ingredients. Deep sigh. Why can't everyone do this??
I'm hooked. Houseman, you reeled me in hard and fast!
We had roasted chicken w/charred corn succotash, steak and fries, warm peas w/ feta, honey, and nepitella, heirloom tomato toast with smoked mayo (5M stars), plum and almond galette, and the peach upside down cake with bourbon and pecans. All 5 stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟+

What a lovely and delectable meal. We ordered the Stracciatella, Cauliflower, Steak and Fries, and finished with the Apricot Mess. The service was attentive and informative, and each dish was better than the next. I will be going back!

I’ll give this place 5 stars for the overall experience. Loved the neighborhood vibe—cozy, welcoming, and unpretentious. Service was friendly and attentive, and the space has that ideal mix of energy and calm.
I had a glass of the orange wine, which was lovely. Wines by the glass are mostly in the $18–$20 range—pretty standard for NYC—and the list is small but thoughtful, with some interesting, well-chosen options.
Food-wise, it was more of a 4–4.5 this time around, but I know that often comes down to what you order. For starters, we had the fried cardoons and the bread with ramp butter. The bread was grilled but unfortunately too burnt, and the char ended up overpowering everything. The ramp butter was nicely salty and helped balance the flavor, but overall the dish didn’t quite land. The cardoons were fried well but lacked seasoning or flavor—menu said jalapeño and lemon, but it was just a few slices of jalapeño on the plate.
The mains, though, are where this place really shines. The steak frites was spot-on: perfectly cooked steak and salty, crispy fries. The roasted chicken had beautifully crisp skin and juicy meat. The lemon aioli brought just the right brightness, and the unexpected croutons added a great crunch that tied the whole dish together.
For dessert, I had the Dubai chocolate brownie. It leaned a bit dry and earthy—definitely not your rich, indulgent kind of brownie.
Houseman has been on my list for a while, and I’m glad I finally made it. I’ll be back for sure—next time with different starters, and maybe another glass of that orange wine.

The place is very popular with the locals. Lots of people dining in and also getting take out. We had very nice meals with good wine and also the Dubai chocolate cake was amazing. Service was good and so was the wines! It’s decently priced for NY.
