Waiter came over as we were mid entree and politely (and somewhat embarrassed) told us their weekend policy was to turn tables in 60-90 minutes so we only had a few minutes left and that if we wanted dessert, we needed to order it right then. Then in the middle of dessert another staff member basically came over, handed us the bill, and told us another party was waiting for our table and that we needed to pay and leave. We love the restaurant and have been there many times, but...
We had the Swordfish special, which was cooked perfectly. The wine was very good, reasonably priced for a restaurant. Service was cordial and friendly. The ambience was very unique, since the restaurant is in the basement of a building, full of interesting and well decorated nooks and crannies.
We have sought out restaurants for pre-Philharmonic dinners for more than 30 years and had not before encountered Shalel. Its location is convenient to Lincoln Center and the restaurant surprised us with its Mediterranean cuisine. Our expectation was for traditional eastern Mediterranean offerings, but the menu was much broader geographically, including dishes with Iberian influences as well.
