I visited Domaine Serene Wine Lounge in Portland expecting a premium wine tasting experience, but I left feeling that the focus was much more on selling memberships than on sharing and showcasing the wines.

The tasting itself was expensive for what was offered. The pours were quite small, and guests are encouraged to purchase wine, with bottles often priced well above $100. The overall experience felt more like a sales presentation than a wine tasting.

I have visited many wineries and tasting rooms where the experience includes a tour, education about the vineyards, the winemaking process, and a genuine opportunity to learn about the wines. Here, there was no tour or behind-the-scenes experience—just a strong emphasis on memberships and wine sales.

The wines were good, and the venue is beautiful, which is why I’m giving 3 stars instead of fewer. However, for the price, I expected a more engaging and educational wine experience rather than a sales-focused one.

I can't rate the food because we didn't eat. The wine tastings were amazing. Great wine, exceptional service. These people know what they're taking about.

I have to say, I was unfortunately pretty disappointed in our experience at Domaine Serene in downtown Portland yesterday. I took my wife for a day of fun for her birthday and this was one of our stops. When we first arrived, our server went straight into pitching us on a membership before asking why we were there, what we were interested in, etc.

She then made several inappropriate comments assuming where we stood financially based on our age. The first comment was alluding to us not being able to afford the top membership tier without us indicating that whatsoever, but she said “it’s probably too expensive for someone your age”.

Then came the ordering… I told her we were there for our first wine tasting after recently getting more into wine and that we wanted to do a slight. She gave us brief descriptions of the various flight and AGAIN noted “the sommelier flight is pretty expensive, so you guys probably won’t want to do that.” Well, I had planned on doing the sommelier flight until the multiple comments about us being able to afford it. I wanted to give as least money as possible after this interaction and contemplated leaving entirely, but because this was for my wife’s birthday we stayed.

She again made a comment during the tasting about how we could get our own membership so that I didn’t have to take bottles from my dad?! I had mentioned my dad was a member, but I don’t bum bottles of wine off him.

Finally, her description of the different wines was awful in comparison to the other guy working there who we were luckily able to hear describe each wine to another party. She told us about the family and the different estates, but hardly anything about the wine itself. The entire reason we went was to learn more about wine.

The only reason I’m giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because she let us use my dad’s membership for a discount. I don’t think I’ll ever go back based on this interaction and certainly won’t recommended the place to my friends, many of whom are much more into wine than me.

The interaction left me feeling bad and the woman serving us was condescending, yet I still left a good tip. My wife and I have very successful careers, travel around the world, and have no problem dropping money on things, but we will spend our money elsewhere.

Our server Ciara was fantastic! Super knowledgeable about the wines they make and the regions they come from. Shared lots of friendly insight about the wines we tried so that we could enjoy them to the fullest. The wines were all excellent. Ambience was lovely. The live music was the cherry on top--not sure of the guy's name but he had a great voice, played guitar well, and sang a fun mix of familiar songs.

Amazing wine bar. Service was phenomenal, loved talking with them about the wine. Very knowledgeable. Wine club seems like a good value on its surface, but not quite as good as we originally thought. The wine is very top tier, and their French options are excellent.

What an evening!
From start to finish—and even before, it was fabulous. The wines are delicious — we did the prestige and estate flights. Arianna took care of us, and she is just delightful, as we as very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about wine. Also a shout-out to Darien and Ashton.
