“The historic Saint Vincent Gristmill, built by Benedictine monks in 1854, still grinds flour the old-fashioned way for use in breads and other baked goods sold at the mill store and used by local producers today. Monks continue the tradition of stone‑ground grain for bread like the “St. Vincent Bread” that helped sustain the community in the 19th century, and the gristmill remains a museum and general store preserving western Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage.
Nearby Friendship Farms is a working family farm, bakery, grass‑fed beef operation, and native plant nursery that uses that flour and other local ingredients to bake rustic, hearth‑style breads and produce pasture‑raised Angus beef for sale at its farm store and in the region. Their breads and beef products are carried in a number of supermarkets and markets around southwestern Pennsylvania, including Giant Eagle locations in Ligonier, Latrobe, Irwin, Edgewood Towne Center, Hempfield, Squirrel Hill, Fox Chapel, Greentree, and Market District stores, as well as in Nature’s Way Natural Food Store in Greensburg, McGinnis Sisters in Monroeville, Barbs Country Market in Rector, and County Market in Mount Pleasant; Saint Vincent Gristmill’s own shop also stocks them.“
