Is there much to this place? Not really. But if you're walking around the area on a warm, sunny day, nothing tops a gelati from Rita's. I lived in Pittsburgh for a year over twenty years ago, discovered this place maybe a month before I moved away. Since then, if I visit and the place is open, I have to stop here.Even when there's a line, service is always quick and friendly. For the treats themselves, the cup will look small when you see it empty, but I've always found that the small is the perfect size, at least for the gelati.

My bf and I went to Squirrel Hill for dinner and being a hot day, we were looking for some dessert to cool us down. We noticed so many people walking around with cups of Italian ice and custard from Rita's, so we decided to give it a try. Ordering is all done through a counter, so it's very straightforward. There isn't any in store seating, but most people just walk and eat or sit at a bench nearby. I liked both the custard and Italian ice. However, I didn't like mixing the Italian ice and custard together as much. Next time I'll just get either the Italian ice or custard by itself. The custard was what really surprised me. I've never had custard before so for some reason I thought it was like a swirl of whipped cream. Oh boy, I was wrong. It was sort of like thick, creamy frozen yogurt/ice cream - so good! Just be aware that the custard is quite heavy, so pairing it with the Italian ice could give some good contrast to balance out the flavors. There are several flavors to choose from for the Italian ice. I believe it's a rotating menu, so I'm looking forward to trying out more. They also sell Italian ice flights in case you can't make up your mind on what flavor to get.

Amazing ice cream and better service! I had the chocolate and the coffee custard. The coffee flavor was a little too sweet to my liking but the chocolate custard was so rich and flavorful.The staff was incredibly helpful. I’d go back again just to have a conversation with them. It's cold and it has childhood nostalgia. I can't say it's actually all that tasty as frozen desserts go, but it's a neighborhood fixture.
First time visiting. Young lady with red hair behind the counter taking orders was short with us and seemed confused when we gave her our orders. I've worked customer service before so I was making extra sure I wasn't being a j**** She wasn't just rude to us but also the other two staff members who were making our orders. Instead of writing orders down she just said them to her coworkers and got snarky when they asked for clarification. I got my shake and right away noticed it was missing the toppings I asked for. I brought it to her attention and she claimed they were blended in. She walked away and asked the employee who made my shake if he actually put them in. He said no and she laughed. When the rest of my order arrived I let her know I heard their conversation. With attitude she asked if I wanted them to remake it and angrily tossed it when I politely asked please.
