**Kitano Shokudo** is a charming, intimate Japanese-fusion restaurant on Avenue du Mont-Royal, run solo by chef Kitano and seating about 18 people under a striking portrait of Haile Selassie. The restaurant has limited spots, so reservations are advised. The entrance is not easy to find, right next to Ohayo Cafe.
The food is delicious, fresh, and full of flavor. The menu is small but flawless. Highlights include Maguro futomaki, Karaage, Duck mazemen (a perfectly tender duck leg over rich noodles), and Uni Carbonara (a decadent, sea-urchin-infused twist on the Italian classic). Other standout dishes are the shoyu ramen with duck, maguro don, Chirashi Sushi, and the daily menu spicy crab soup with duck. Everything is beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. For dessert, the yuzu tart is a banger of a note to end on, and the sake kasu ice cream is a revelation. The cocktails are also amazing.
Service is attentive, kind, and friendly from start to finish. The ambiance is chic and vibrant without feeling too loud. Expect food to be slow in coming, as there is not a cast of thousands in the kitchen. A true trouvaille for authentic Japanese food and a truly magical dining experience.
