“I recently checked out Pause (the new identity of the former Buddy’s), and it is a much-improved experience. While the physical layout remains familiar, the change in ownership has clearly breathed new life into the space.
What I Liked:
The Atmosphere: They’ve hit the sweet spot with the music—it’s at the right volume where you can actually enjoy the vibe without screaming over your friends.
The Layout: There are large TVs everywhere and plenty of table seating, making it a great spot to actually hang out. The covered outdoor space is also a huge plus for Houston weather.
Cleanliness & Convenience: The restrooms were clean (always a win), and I love the connecting hallway that leads directly to the neighboring bar, Play.
Value: The drink prices are very reasonable for the area.
Events:
During my visit, there was a fundraiser with drag bingo. While that isn’t personally my scene, it was well-organized and the crowd seemed to be having fun. If you enjoy themed events and drag performances, definitely check their calendar.
Overall: Whether you’re stopping by for a casual drink or headed out for a full night in Montrose, Pause is a solid choice. It keeps the best parts of the old space while fixing the service and vibe.“

“Ripcord is always a solid choice when you just want a good drink in a chill environment. I really appreciate the calming, dark atmosphere inside—it’s perfect for decompressing. The bartenders are attentive and quick, and the drink prices are standard for the neighborhood.
One of the best things about this place is the crowd. It feels very welcoming and non-contentious, without the cliquey judgment you find at some of the other bars down the street. They’ve also done a great job updating the outdoor patio; there is plenty of seating and nice little areas for private conversations.
Note that they do have drag shows, which isn't really my thing, but they are usually late enough at night that you can enjoy a quiet evening before they start.“

“I made a reservation for the burlesque show and I was NOT disappointed. The entire staff was super kind and happy to answer all of my questions. The food was amazing. The staff was incredibly kind and they were more than happy to laugh and joke with us. The seating was comfortable and perfectly placed to see the show. I will definitely be going back to try out there pool side reservations as well.“

“Excellent atmosphere, really cute space with lots of outdoor seating and a really fun vibe (love all the neon signs!) Drinks are reasonably priced. Clearly has built a strong community!

Also, I left my jacket there on NYE. I came back two weeks later and it was in lost and found with all of the pocket contents still there, even the cash. That speaks to the community and staff in a really good way, I think.“

“Great place to grab a drink and unwind. The many different rooms to suit your comfort. My fave is the karaoke and of course the patio. Staff is all very friendly and makes you feel welcomed. I recently learned of steak night so I will definitely be by to try this out“
