The ribs and potato salad are to die for. Theres legit a mom and pop in the kitchen of this hole-in-the-wall spot.

AVOID THE RIBS!Since bbq sandwich and beans was good value for lunch, I figured the ribs would be equally as good. Ribs were over cooked, probably boiled and then finished on grill and way to expensive for five ribs. They were chewy and I gave them to my dog because they were not at all palatable.I would recommend they stop serving ribs and just stick with chopped bbq and beans. Keep it simple.

The very young, rude lady who showed no signs of customer service protocol and just general upbringing and politeness, showed me an outdated sign when I inquired about prices and then became extremely rude when I questioned what I was charged. The sign gave one price( hand written) but she then quoted something different. I would not have felt some kinda way, if she had been more pleasant in her delivery and maybe an explanation as to why there was a difference ?. Even though my husband and I enjoyed the food, it is a "hard" no as to if I will return.

The baked beans was all right. However, the BBQ was cold, without any sauce and absolutely flavorless. The "meat" was white (please see attached photo). It surely wasn't beef. To top off, the owner is somewhat rough around the edges, which discouraged us from going back there to return the food. We literally threw it away and got food from somewhere else. Huge waste of time and money.

Very homey. Simple Southern BBQ, served in a paper bag. They don't sell fries, but all the other staples that go along with BBQ. Coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad, green beans and seasonally collard greens. A few other items such as ribs. Baked Beans top-tier, served in a Styrofoam cup.

I've been going to Wilkes for years and the food has always been yummy. Yesterday I stopped by, ordered a bb chicken dinner & a rib dinner. It was almost 25.00 dollars, (23 & change). I thought to myself, this must be one hell of a dinner. Wrong, the ribs were terrible. They were cold, tough & hard to chew. The texture of the meat was like they had cooked them days earlier & microwaved to serve. Upon looking closely at the meat I could see the membrane had not been pulled off of the back which explains the toughnest & hard to chew. The sides were great, they tasted like grandmas. Quality ribs should o have a nice pop or snap not a Pull & Tug exercise. When you pull up to a bbq dive & don't see smoke coming out of a stack in the roof or somewhere on the premises, & you don't smell the aroma in the air, know that that meat has been cooked days earlier, if not weeks.

My family and I love Wilks BBQ. They have the best BBQ I’ve ever had as well as the coleslaw. In fact their baked beans and collard greens are delicious also. I have served it many times when we have a large crowd to feed. Don’t let the outside appearance stop you. It’s truly a hole in the wall.

Good customer service. The greens were on point! However, the bbq wasn't good to me. The ribs tasted boiled and not off the smoker.

Hometown favorite. Everytime i go to Hampton its a must stop. Home cooking at its best. Takes me back to being a kid growing up in Wythe.

When I worked at Fort Monroe years ago, I used to treat myself to Wilkes a few times a month. I moved to Petersburg in 2015 and missed the Carolina style BBQ. Moved back to Hampton in 2019 and I forgot about Wilkes until recently. Been looking for good BBQ since. All the places around here have heavily smoked BBQ with tons of seasonings and sauce. These chain BBQ you can't tell the beef from the pork because there is so much smoke and seasoning. For folks that are familiar with Carolina style BBQ, it is totally different from that type of BBQ.Stopped by Wilkes yesterday and it's still the best Carolina BBQ in the area. The collard greens are unmatched by any other restaurant in the area. Two dinners with sides for $20. You are going to pay more than twice that amount at the other BBQ places in the area.I don't understand these folks from out of state giving this place a bad review. From their reviews, they obviously don't know what Carolina BBQ is. Also, I saw comments that this place buys their foods in bulk from one of the membership stores. I have personally seen the cook carrying in a fresh full side of pork and fresh picked collards from his personal vehicle. That is why you can only get the collards in winter. Please don't trash the food if you don't understand the type of BBQ or the style of cooking. If you want food with so much smoke and seasoning that you can't tell the difference between pork, beef or chicken, go to one of those chain restaurants. If you want real Carolina BBQ and fresh from the garden greens, this place will not disappoint. This is one of the few family owned businesses that still remain in Hampton after many years. It's not fancy, in fact the building looks a little run down but the food is good and the prices are the best in the area.
