I wanted something so delicious to eat on my lunch break and I was highly disappointed. Ms. Ellen was sooo sweet and caring and the shop is absolutely beautiful, but the food was just not for me personally. I like my ribs more meaty and seasoned with some trauma, char, something to them. The yams were good. The Mac and cheese was cheesy, but needed more flavoring. My heart was broken when she allowed me to try to apple pie and it was served cold on aluminum foil. This to me gave the impression it was hot, but now has to be removed to heat it quickly in the microwave or wait for the oven. In 2025 the average cost of a meal is $20-25 and I just didn’t want this disappointing feeling.

A co worker bragged to me how good this place had good soul food my first time trying this place was horrible so On January 14 he had Oder me a Salisbury dinner with greens,potato salad and rice and gravy and corn bread The Salisbury was not cooked all the way was not seasoned didn’t have no onions the green was nasty they was sweet sugar don’t go in greens and the corn bread was stale he will be coming in there with pictures that I took of the bloody meat I lives in Norfolk cause I would’ve brought it back myself I was very,very Disappointed🙄😡 And I do have proof in my phone I wish I could’ve posted them up here anyway hopefully he’ll be in there sometime this week cause he is from Portsmouth

“Now this is SOUL FOOD!” Not to mention the awesome hospitality. The prices are great, along with the portions sizes and you can tell that every dish is made with love. Hands down, this place is unmatched. ❤️

The Turkey wings was very dry and the collards wasn't season you do get a lot of food but the quality of the food wasn't good I always came to this restaurant it had and the Passion of food it's not from the heart it's all about the money I know you have to make the money but the Passion is not there

I went to Ellen's today I had a taste for some smothered pork chops also had white rice and gravy and collard greens the best meal I've had in a long time food was delicious the helpings are good great place to eat

The food was horrible the Mac and cheese tested like box Mac and cheese like craft mac & cheese and the yams were so stringy that you can’t even eat them so horrible for it be a black owned restaurant never again

My food use to taste delicious but my ribs was not done yesterday the person that took my order needs to learn how to treat people she’s not a ppl person so I called to tell her that ribs was tuff as hell so sad when u done paid all that money thinking it’s going to be right

I met Ellen over 17 years ago during a time of life I had no family close around. She was like a 2nd mother to me! I am proud to say that was one of her first customers when she first started! Now, I live on the other side of the state, but will visit every single time I come to Virginia Beach. I just thoroughly enjoyed some fish, yams, green beans, egg rolls, and German Chocolate Cake! All of it was EXCELLENT! I highly recommend Ellen's Homestyle & BBQ where you will meet one of the best people this world has to offer (Ellen) and enjoy some fantastic food!

My first time going here and I arrived 10 minutes before they closed and they still had plenty of fresh food. I got two dinners….both with smothered pork chops and collard greens and one had mac and cheese and the other had rice. Food was delicious and plentiful. Definitely enough for two to three people depending on how much you eat. Pie and cornbread was also amazing. Definitely will be back! Only thing is they do not take cash but there is an ATM machine in the smoke shop across the street.
