Downtown Chief is a popular restaurant known for its great burgers and fries, cold beer, and live music. The restaurant is located in a wonderful old downtown building with a great atmosphere and acoustics. The service is generally excellent, though it can be a bit quick when the restaurant is packed, as it often is on busy weekends. The kitchen is praised for its ability to get food out quickly, hot, and delicious, with highlights including the enormous and smoky "trash can fries" and excellent southwest egg rolls. While the meat dishes can be hit-or-miss, the vegetable dishes are wonderful, with the black pepper cabbage being a standout. The restaurant has room for improvement in a few areas, such as the instant mashed potatoes, but overall, Downtown Chief is a great dining destination with a loyal following.
