“Del Vecchio Pasta Fresca is a must destination when visiting Salt Spring Island for fresh pasta and pizza lovers. Owner and Chef Max creates delicious Italian favorites. We tried Ravioli filled with porcini mushrooms and the Margherita pizza... both were delicious and served with big smiles. This small place is worth a detour. It is a small hole in the wall tucked into the corner of one of the plazas downtown and I will agree with the other reviewers about not being put off by the establishment nor the owner/operator initially appearing rough around the edges (as 95% of Back of House are!), as he cares a lot about making good pizza for affordable prices, he does all the work himself, and he’s actually very sweet!So, for vegan cheese, Darren actually MAKES his own vegan cheese (none of that Daiya stuff!) which, before baking, has a liquid consistency and is poured on the pizza. I thought he mistakenly gave me real cheese when I first bought a pizza from Pizza Cavern, but I didn’t have an adverse reaction after I ate it (and I’m very lactose intolerant), so I BEGGED him to divulge what was in it…Darren’s vegan cheese is actually primarily vegetable-based, but he has tinkered with the recipe and ingredients until he was able to almost exactly replicate the stretch and tang of fresh dairy mozzarella.I don’t live on Salt Spring anymore but I was fully prepared to bankrupt myself on this pizza.Darren! I miss you and getting, ‘two large vegan pesto veggie pizzas, with banana peppers instead of bell peppers, and add artichoke hearts’!“
“I came with my 2 and 4 year olds - who are not normally fun restaurant companions - and had the best time ever! Not only was our pizza delicious, the staff were super friendly and even gave my boys pizza dough to play with while we waited for our food. we then watched the food being made. What a great place!!!“
“I've been a Basil's customer since moving to SSI from Vancouver 3 years ago and was eager to try all the food venues right away. Not much has stayed with me since but Basil's Pizza sure has. Have only ever tried the Margarita as I'm vegetarian but It's got pure ingredients and a very sophisticated, high quality, simplicity. Best pizza on the Island, as far as I'm concerned, and Vancouver, as well. I can't rate Basil's Pizza highly enough.“
