SAY IT ISN'T SO BERKELEYSIDE! 46 years, Berkeley staple Au Coquelet Cafe closes its doors." Growing up in Berkeley in the 90s, I could count on one hand the number of places a minor could legally, safely, and affordably hang out with friends past midnight. Delightful, affordable eats in a very nice, new sidewalk gazebo, sheltered from passersby with big planters. He had fish and chips with a beer and some cheesecake, while I had some veggie chili and a hot licorice spice tea. We both came away happy.The sole employee was very nice to us.

I remembered this cafe fondly from when my sister was a student at UC but this time I discovered that the food here is greasy, tasteless, poorly presented and overpriced for what it is. I had $13.95 Eggs and Breakfast Meat, a pricy breakfast to me. My ham was way too salty and the potatoes were soggy, covered with huge chunks of uncut onions and fried with too much oil.
