Echizen is a go-to Japanese restaurant in OC, offering good, simple basic food with many options. It is the most authentic Japanese restaurant for miles, with a huge selection of authentic Japanese izakaya dishes, most of which are as good or better than any izakaya in Japan. Meals include a sashimi plate for four with tender scallops, salmon, yellowtail, tuna, firefly squid, and uni. Other dishes include onigiri grilled with umeboshi or sour plum, kakiage with onion and shrimp, beef tataki with mustard and lemon, grilled beef tongue, matcha cold noodles, udon, thin noodles soup, chazuke with bits of grilled salmon, scrambled egg with nira, fried whitefish, and smoked mackerel. Daily lunch specials range from $14 to $20, tax included. The food is consistent and honest Japanese homey food. Under new ownership, the food is just as good, with better sashimi and tonkatsu. The restaurant has limited seating and hours, so reservations are suggested. Hope to see this little hole in the wall thrive for years to come.
