S & J Gran Cafe is a modern restaurant at the back of The Plaza At Diamond Creek, not easily viewed from the street. The cafe is cute and clean, with a colorful handwritten menu mural and delightful decor. The menu offers many choices for breakfast, with dishes influenced by several Latin and Hispanic countries and the U.S. Options include the Chapin plate, Oaxacan breakfast plates, chilaquiles, a ham and cheese omelet, the Denver Omelette, and the Gran burrito. Sides include fried potatoes, black beans or pinto beans, plantains, eggs, and bread.
Reviews of the food are mixed. Positive items include chilaquiles with homemade green sauce, exceptional Cafe Latte, wonderful Mexican Mocha, tasty Pineapple Aguas Frescas, fresh green juice, and the Chapin plate with cheese, black beans, and a fried plantain. The fried potatoes are delicious with good seasoning. However, some dishes received criticism: the Carne Asada Chilaquiles had tough asada and greasy chips, the Gran burrito was dry, overcooked, and lacked spicy sauce or salsa, the Wheat Toast was burnt, and one reviewer found the chilaquilles too salty. One customer reported illness after a meal.
Service is generally described as good, with pleasant, attentive, and friendly servers, though one visit had slower service due to a server in training. A significant concern is the restroom, which has only one stall open to the public marked men’s, with no interior lock, creating discomfort. The restaurant is recommended by some for a next meal, with plans to return, while others would not order specific items again.
