I love accessing the Sara Wan trailhead at Malibu Seafood — it’s one of my go-to Malibu hikes. And after the trail loop, Malibu Seafood is the perfect spot to grab something fresh and enjoy the ocean-view patio. Definitely one of those classic Malibu combos I never get tired of.
Classic place with incredibly tasty fish from a guy that’s not a fish guy and the shrimp delicious.
Best clam chowder and fish and chips on the West Coast.

Malibu Seafood Fresh Fish Market & Patio Cafe is a popular beachside seafood spot in Malibu, known for its great food and value. The location is fantastic, overlooking the ocean, making it a perfect spot to visit after a hiking trail. The restaurant offers a casual ordering process where customers order at a counter, and food is delivered when ready. There is no alcohol served. The menu features a variety of options, including grilled fish tacos and shrimp/crab cocktail, which have received positive reviews. Portions are generous, often enough for two people. Many customers praise the fresh, delicious food and friendly staff who keep the restaurant clean at all times.
The place is very popular, so expect a line, especially during weekends. Customers recommend building around 30 minutes for waiting in line and food to arrive. The line moves quickly, as they give you a waiting buzzer to pick up your food. Parking can be a challenge, with a small free lot and a paid lot nearby, which is often enforced with parking tickets. Street parking is also available. Visitors advise paying the $12 parking fee to avoid a ticket and recommend visiting during off-peak hours for a better experience.
Despite potential waits for parking and food, customers say it is worth it for the excellent food and ambiance. Many enjoy the fish and chips, which are tender, fresh, flaky, and served with delicious batter. The clam chowder and fries are also highly praised. The location offers a great spot right off the beach, and visitors are encouraged to stay for the sunset and a swim. A pro tip is to avoid parking in front of the fire hydrant on PCH to prevent tickets. Overall, Malibu Seafood remains a favorite for seafood in Malibu, with a reputation for consistently high quality over two decades.
Recent reviews highlight a small line that moves pretty quickly. Customers enjoyed ordering the small clam chowder, which was amazing, along with two fish tacos that come with a lot of fish and are grilled to perfection. The ceviche was fresh, with small scallops, and came with chips. Sitting on the upper patio overlooking the ocean, visitors enjoyed a perfect lunch and expressed a desire to return. Other reviews praise giant, crispy fish and chips with delectable tartar sauce, stating they will be dreaming about it until next time. While chowder and fried shrimp received mixed reviews, the fish was plenty for one hungry person. Customers appreciated helpful staff at the counter and fair pricing, making it a must-visit if in the area. Enjoying the crashing waves from outdoor seating added to the experience.
Another customer described an hour-long line in the sun to place an order, with about 20 minutes for the food to be ready. They ordered fish and chips, shrimp tacos, fish tacos, a grilled salmon platter, and fountain drinks. The fountain drink was small, about the size of a medium at most places. While the food was good, it did not meet the high expectations. The tacos lacked shredded cabbage or lettuce and had a lot of sauce, resulting in a one-note flavor. Fish and chips, salmon, rice, and coleslaw were excellent. Parking in the lot is not guaranteed, and the restroom was noted as clean. Located right on PCH across from the beach, the spot is a neat local historic place, though signs prohibit dogs in the dining areas despite indications otherwise. Overall, the experience was decent, with the outdoor seating offering views of the crashing waves.
