I’ve been a fan of these wines for years and it was an absolute pleasure to visit in person. Charlie Smith himself conducted the tasting and then took us on a tour of the property. As we walked and admired the stunning vistas, he recounted how he and his brother Stu built winery and established the vineyards themselves. Perhaps the best winery visit I’ve had.
Smith Madrone was our absolute favorite. Charles, one of the brothers and the winemaker, is an absolute gem. So knowledgeable, so generous with his time, and not a hint of pretension. He walked us through everything, the vineyard's history, the winemaking, the philosophy behind it all. You can feel that this is a labor of love.
