Based on the reviews, La Peñita San José is a restaurant serving great authentic food in downtown San Jose. The Chile Relleno lunch was described as the best ever, with lots of cheese and giant peppers, including rice and beans, and amazing salsa with lots of onions. Other traditional Mexican dishes include the albondigas soup, which is awesome, and the enchiladas and caldo de res. The pozole and menudo are available on the weekends. The horchata and concha’s are also worth mentioning. The light lunch chicken taco plate was very good, with good beans and rice. The food is absolutely delicious, full of flavor, fresh, and cooked perfectly. The service is warm and welcoming. The restaurant has a liquor license. It is located on the south end of downtown, so it is a little quiet. The five stars are for the mini vases of purple orchids all over the place. Downtown parking costs money but is easy and plentiful across the street. For the buses, take bus 66 or 68 and stop near the I-280 interchange. The beef, rice, and beans platter ranked a solid 3 stars out of 5. The menu is missing more vegetables and fruits, more innovative items, and intercultural mashups. The competition around La Peñita is strong.
