Tony's Jacal, a charming restaurant that has been serving up delectable Mexican cuisine since 1946, is a hidden gem worth discovering. Stepping into this establishment is like stepping back in time, with its rich history and nostalgic décor creating an atmosphere that enhances the dining experience. The outdoor dining patio is especially nice on pleasant days.
Despite its Solana/Del Mar location, parking can be a bit tight, but there are designated spots scattered around the residential area. The customer service, while not overly warm, is efficient, although some reviews mention slow service at times. Orders are taken swiftly, and food arrives fairly quickly, even when the restaurant is busy.
The food is the real star of the show at Tony's Jacal. The shrimp ceviche is flavorful, though some may crave more shrimp amidst the abundance of fresh veggies. The chicken enchiladas Verde and Chicken Mole are both delicious, with the Verde sauce being a standout and the Chicken Mole's rich, velvety sauce another highlight. The homemade flour tortillas are the best, but for vegetarians, it's recommended to ask for corn tortillas instead, as the flour ones contain lard. The steak and shrimp fajitas have also received high praise, described as amazing by a customer.
While the sauces are alright, the chilaquiles could be a bit bland. The Cadillac Margarita did not disappoint, and the rice and beans are out of this world, with chips and salsa being great, and the salsa wonderfully heated. However, some find the margarita to taste like commercial syrup. Overall, Tony's Jacal is a historic restaurant with a great atmosphere, delicious food, and portions that are generous, making it a place worth visiting.
