About Sweet Home Cafe

Sweet Home Cafe offers a variety of delicious meals, including the BBQ Pulled Pork, fried chicken with mac & cheese, and build-your-own bowl options. The portions are generous, and the flavors are memorable. The overall dining experience is enjoyable, though some dishes like collard greens and cornbread might not be for everyone. Prices can be a bit steep, but discounts are available for Smithsonian members. The cafe is located in the lower level of the African-American History Museum, and it can seat a little over 400 people. The cafe is clean and well-maintained, and the architecture and design are simply beautiful. Customers have praised the excellent soul food, well-prepared fried chicken, baked beans, mac and potato salad, and delicious desserts. However, some have noted a lack of seasoning, which may be due to the cafe's partnership with a healthcare provider. The staff is described as polite and kind, but some customers have found the shouting of food station information to be rude. Overall, Sweet Home Cafe offers a unique and enjoyable dining experience for visitors to the museum.

Overall, the foods flavor was amazing but cold. It’s $4 for a piece of cornbread but it was ice cold. Same with my mac and cheese it was cold and my greens and chicken were lukewarm. Unfortunately I had heard better things about the food but the greens also were not seasoned very well even without the typical meat seasoning. Lastly, the service was not acceptable as a tradition and novelty that comes with south food, a black household, or your grandmas hug, is hospitality...read full review
Incredible food! We got a recommendation from a friend to eat here and they were totally right! My favorite was the pulled pork and mac and cheese but my brother loved the buttermilk fried chicken so much he went back to buy more. WARNING, the portions are pretty big. Our family of 6 bought three big dishes with cornbread and mac and cheese as sides and still barely finished everything, so pick wisely!! There are a lot of dishes farther down the line so look around before you...read full review
The food was your standard Soul Food. I had chicken and fries. The tenders were good and all but just a little too crispy crunchy for me. More breading than meat. Others in my group had shrimp w/grits and hotdogs and they were just fine. Kind of expensive and ymmv on if it's worth it. Workers and cashier were nice. Overall I give it about 3 1/2 out of 10.
