Great food! The only complaint I have is the laptop policy which prevents this from being a place to get work done especially over the weekend. However that’s subjective and I can understand some of the reasoning. The food is outstanding
The Royal made for a fun weekend brunch with a Latin American twist. I had the arepas with scrambled eggs and avocado, and the flavors were fresh without being too heavy. We also shared an order of plantains, which had a nice caramelized edge. The coffee was good, and the staff kept things moving even with a steady crowd. I liked the colorful, casual atmosphere and the mix of familiar and less typical dishes on the menu.

The Royal is a consistently great spot in the neighborhood, offering excellent coffee drinks and pastry items, particularly the Guava Pastry, in the morning. They also serve lunch options and cocktails and food for dinner. While the food can be a little expensive, there has never been a bad dish. The cocktails are always creative and well-balanced. The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance with shaded outdoor seating, nice views, and a homely feel that encourages lingering for coffee, cocktails, and delicious fare like fresh fries with queso, crispy empanadas with a delectable green dipping sauce, and the heart of palm arepa for vegans. The staff is friendly and professional, providing great suggestions, and reservations are encouraged. The menu is somewhat smaller than expected, but the drink options are truly delicious. The atmosphere has a pub-like feel with an eclectic menu and outside seating, where one can hear the official bird song of Washington DC - the police siren. It’s a place perfect for special celebrations, offering flavorful dishes like the parillada for two, a large platter of grilled meats and seafood including steak, sausages, and shrimp, along with seasonal vegetables and sauces, and the braised beef gnocchi, which is highly recommended. Overall, The Royal combines good food, creative cocktails, and a cozy, welcoming environment.
