Despite its prime location and spacious dining area, its cuisine could have been better. Our orders of noodle soups, sushi, rolls, and yakitori were average, and the service was mediocre.

Food was ok. Expected a little bit more. Spicy miso was spicy, but just a hint of miso. Noodles was not what im used to like the one from daikaya a couple of blocks away.

I would skip this place, over priced small portions. LOOK at my salmon roll and tuna roll 9$ each and if u combine them they might make 1 roll and i mean might. The karage arrgg someone dosent know how to fry stuff it was not crunchy ( pale color not enough batter or watery batter) i could tell something wrong already. Underwhelming ramen, should of taken the extra 15 min walk to the legit ramen place but was too tired walking all day. The saving grace the dude that did the yakitory stick skewer was good or everything else sucked that made it good.

Ordered dragon roll and was much smaller than pictured on the menu. Sashimi not flavorful. Ramen was fine.

Racism Restaurant!!I went to this restaurant with a bunch of white friends, the waitress skipped me and took everyone’s orders, even when I asked her, she said I will come back you, but why, I am right here sitting in the middle of my friends. So if you not white and you don’t want to be treated differently, DON’T go there!!! Food is also terrible, not even owned by Japanese!!

The food was pretty good. We went in there with a big party and asked them if they could split up the checks when we arrived. We were told that it would be fine. Fast forward to the end, they tried to give us one huge check. It then took over an hour to sort it out. The manager was reluctant to work with us. We never would have eaten there if they said they could split up the checks for the beginning.Bottom line. The food is pretty good. The prices are a little high.

Bad service, mediocre food and 20% service charge (automatic gratuity) for a group of 5. Won't be back.

We love this place! So much that we introduced this place to our close friends. However the service was slow (we waited 20 min for canned drinks). Granted it was a holiday so there was quite a turnout. The reason of the low rating is that we got charged an extra 20% service fee for 5 guests and we only had 4 adults and an infant who ate no food there! Unfortunately we couldn't get anything back it was still a great time but definitely needs to double check when charging customer's bill.

Umaya is well located for visits to the American Art and National Portrait Gallery Museums nearby and the Gallery Place Metro stop. The Japanese menu is extensive and includes Appetisers, Sushi, Donburi, Noodle, and Ramen dishes. We split a Mango Tango Sushi as a starter. It was delicious as was our second dish of Tomato Vegetarian Ramen. We each had one glass of wine. The service was great too. The restaurant is located on the lower level of an office building and has some outdoor seating which will be good once we are no longer in winter. Highly recommend.

Food is decent but I was a bit underwhelmed by the noodles in my vegetarian ramen. They were a bit rubbery but there were different from my friends, which seemed a bit better. We also tried the vegetable croquette which was pretty decent.

I have never left a poor review for a resturaunt, but I have also never been served food I genuinely felt deserved to be sent back and stricken from my bill. I experienced a lot of firsts, tonight. This place looked great from outside, was near to my hotel, and had a fun atmosphere at first glance. Despite an abundance of poor reviews, I decided to give it a shot with my bestie who, like me, adores Japanese and Asian fusion cuisine. It is a bad, bad sign when the best menu item you ordered is a grilled pepper on a stick without seasoning. From the croquette to the salmon, the bland eel and sinew-y scallops, nothing about their rolls hit quite right. There were as many sesame seeds as were grains of rice. In good faith I can't recommend anyone eat here, especially at this price point, especially especially anyone who loves authentic Japanese and quality Asian fusion dining. There are many significantly higher quality izakaya-style diners within walking distance that will ask less of your dollar and give you more. Full respect and condolense to the waitstaff who have to bare the weight of these customer interractions.Something significant needs to change before Umaya is deserving of the prices they ask. I did not personally fall ill due to the food, but after my experience I completely believe anyone who reports they have. Save your time and money and walk a block towards Chinatown.
