“We booked Hotel Zamora for one night over Labor Day weekend with what seemed like a fairly achievable goal: stay near St. Pete Beach and walk to the beach.

The hotel itself is genuinely nice. The lobby, rooms, and hallways have been tastefully renovated and feel modern and polished. There’s complimentary fruit-infused water in the lobby, plus drinks and snacks for sale.

Then we tried to go to the beach.

Despite being roughly a block from the sand, we learned at check-in that the nearby beach access is unavailable due to an HOA lawsuit. Public access is instead via 22nd Ave. There’s something uniquely frustrating about being able to practically see the beach while being told you cannot, in fact, just walk to it.

The hotel offers a golf cart shuttle from 9am–6pm, but there’s no schedule, making “shuttle service” more of a concept than a timetable. On a busy holiday weekend, we weren’t interested in waiting around for a golf cart to materialize.

So we drove five minutes and paid for parking.

Hotel Zamora is stylish and comfortable, but if you’re booking because the map suggests you can throw on your flip-flops and stroll to the beach, think again. The beach is close. Getting to it is another story.“
