Ming Wah Chinese/Chifa Restaurant is a small, family-owned spot in an old plaza on Nob Hill. It is not a fancy restaurant—the place looks rundown and hasn’t seen a renovation in years, with smeared windows. However, the food is great, reasonably priced, and the portions are enormous. They deliver within a 3-mile radius with a small $2 delivery fee that goes to the driver.
The menu offers both American-Chinese and old-school Chifa dishes. The family pack for $46 is a buyer beware option that works in the customer’s favor, including wonton soup, egg rolls, crab rangoon, pork fried rice, cashew chicken, and chicken lo mein. The soup is generous and hearty; the mixed chaufa (fried rice with pork, chicken, and shrimp) is smoky with good wok hei. The fried wontons are crisp and classic, and the Egg Foo Young is the best remembered. However, the crab rangoon was chewy, the egg roll shells were a little hard, and the General Tso’s chicken was extremely bland with no flavor. The Lo Mein is a favorite for regulars.
The menu is tight for Chifa standards but hits all the usual suspects. The phone rings off the hook with takeout orders. Service is prompt, and the staff is very nice.
